Friday, 2nd December 2016

This week was a very busy one in Primary Three.
We started on Monday by exploring the Still Life artwork of The Scottish Colourists. We enjoyed discussing the different styles of their paintings as well as learning about the features of a still life. We then set up our own objects to draw, and concentrated really hard on training ourselves to draw what we can see, and not what we think we can see.

After we had finished our beautiful pictures, we rewarded ourselves by eating all of the delicious fruit – we really deserved it!

On Wednesday we were really excited to take part in our sponsored St. Andrew’s Day event. The activities we took part in included:

  • Scottish Dancing
  • Food Tasting
  • A Powerpoint and Quiz about St. Andrew.
  • Outdoor Games
  • Making Tartan Kilts.
  • Writing an Acrostic Poem about Scotland.

We all took part in each activity with great enthusiasm, and finished our day with a lovely prayer service.
A big thank you to the families and friends of all of the children for your very generous donations!

Finally, we had two celebrations in class this week. The first was for a top goal scorer who received a trophy from his football team, and the second was for the birthday of one of our special classmates.

We look forward to having a well deserved rest this weekend after such a busy week!

Saint Andrew’s Day

Primary One thoroughly enjoyed taking part in all the events to celebrate our patron saint. They had great fun learning how to use the gird and cleek and whip and peerie and enjoyed tasting traditional Scottish food.

The children did very well when taking part in Scottish Country Dancing and showed excellent listening skills to follow the steps with their dance partner.

A great day was had by all!

Well done, Primary One!

Primary Two- Friday 2nd December

This week Primary Two participated in the St Andrew’s Day celebrations.

We were able to take a trip down memory lane and were able to explore games of the past which children in Scotland played. We were introduced to the activities using skipping ropes which was a communal activity in which gran, bair a or weans played together on the pavement outside the tenements of our great cities with signing songs and rhymes. We were able to use a Gird and Cleek which was the ace toy, popular in Victorian times. The children were fascinated with the simple Whip and Peerie which is an excellent activity for developing eye co-ordination.

Later, we were involved in designing our own kilt patterns, completing a Scottish Word Puzzle and studying a Scottish poem. Of course no St Andrew’s Day is complete without a tasting session of Scottish produce – tablet, teacakes and Irn bru.

We learned many new interesting facts about the life of st Andrew. A great time was had by all!

We celebrated St Andrews Day by having a very special snack of Irn-bru, Potato Scones, Pancakes and Shortbread. We wore something tartan and made some tartan with Miss D’Amdrosio using paint and rollers and brushes. We finished off with some Scottish Dancing, which was really hard and exhausting.

FLOATING AND SINKING

Dave from Summerlee Museum came to visit in nursery to do some experimenting in science. He was talking about sinking and floating. He had a range of items and the children had to guess what would happen to them in the water. Everyone then got the opportunity to make a boat and try to float it on the water. Everyone got a little wet but had great fun.

Friday 25 November

This week P5/6 have enjoyed learning about Scottish Politics and the workings of the Scottish Parliament .

We worked with our shoulder partners to research information about our Local MSP Mr Fulton MacGregor. We enjoyed learning about his job as an MSP and his role in our Scottish society.

This week during taught writing we were practising the skill of letter writing . We discussed in groups issues that concern us about our own local community  and then we wrote some fantastic letters to Mr MacGregor highlighting our concerns .

We are looking forward to welcoming a representative of the Scottish Parliament to St Kevin’s on the 1st of December. They will be working with the children in the upper school and I am sure they will be impressed with their knowledge .

We are also delighted to be welcoming a regional MSP on the 5th of December and have already created some fabulous questions to ask during their visit .

Friday 25th November 2016

Hello from Primary 6/7

This week we have been learning about Scottish politics, We have been learning about our devolved parliament and the powers which Holyrood hold in Britain. We are looking forward to Scottish Parliament visiting us for a workshop on the 1st of December where we will be able to have an opportunity to ask questions about the role of parliament in Scotland. We will also be visited on the 5th for a talk by an MSP where he will discuss his role in politics. This is something we are really looking forward to and as you can see we are beginning to learn a lot about our own political system.

‘The next Scottish election is going to be in 2020’ Kristopher Lyons

‘Nicola Sturgeon is the only female First Minister of Scotland, head of our devolved Scottish Parliament ‘ Calum Downs

‘SNP are in charge of Scottish Parliament’ Callum Sharkey

‘The four main parties are S.N.P, Scottish Conservative Party, Scottish Liberal Democrats and Scottish Labour Party’ Calum Downs

‘There are 73 different constituencies in Scotland’ Calum Downs

‘We belong to the Coatbridge and Chryston constituency’ Callum Sharkey

‘Our constituency MP is Philip Boswell of the SNP Party and our MSP is Fulton McGregor of the SNP Party’ Class

‘Nicola Sturgeon graduated from Glasgow University before going into politics’ Kristopher Lyons

We will also be working with Primary 5/6 on our topic where each child will be part of a political party and they must come up with their own manifesto and go through an election campaign. Hopefully on the 5th of December they will be able to gain some insight and tips from an actual elected MSP.

Have a lovely weekend

This week in Primary Three Health and Wellbeing, we have been taking part in some imaginative Yoga activities. We have enjoyed learning new poses and stretches while listening to entertaining stories. We have found that our Yoga breaks help to refresh us and are also very relaxing. As you can see we are already becoming experienced Yogis!

This week we also had two celebrations for two special classmates. The first was for a birthday where we had another delicious cake, and the second was for a star gymnast who won a trophy!
