Eco: Switch Off Fortnight

The Eco Committee are proud to announce that during the final week of Switch Off Fortnight all classes were successful in keeping their promises!

We ended the fortnight with a Switch Off Afternoon, where all classes worked from 2-3pm without any electricity at all. This allowed us to see what it is like for children in other countries who don’t have the same facilities that we do.

It was a very interesting experience!

Friday 1st December

Bonjour from Primary 6/7,

Today we immersed ourselves in our French topic, we carried out lots of different activities such as a French scavenger hunt, we toured Paris landmarks, we even worked in teams to construct a model Eiffel tower, we sang French songs, learned about French food through an interesting food tasting and compared the difference between French school and our own. As you can see it was an action packed day but was enjoyed by all!

Primary two – 1st December 2017

Hello from Primary two

This week the children have been busy celebrating the life of  Scotland’s patron saint, Saint Andrew and exploring the Saltire flag.

The children also throughly enjoyed our French Immersion Day.  In true French fashion they started with French food tasters of baguettes, French cream cheese with dips and finished off with broiche  buns. Thereafter they made French bookmarks and had fun with French quizzes. The children enjoyed working on their oral skills when practising French songs and vocabulary. What an enjoyable and busy week had by all.

Bonjour! Primary One had a fantastic time on Friday when they learned all about French culture. The children enjoyed a taster plate of French breads and cheeses, played boules and took part in fun French related activities. The children thoroughly enjoyed speaking the French language throughout the day and have had great fun learning about famous French landmarks, artists and the French way of life.

Eco Minutes – 22nd November 2017

Wednesday 22nd November

Members Present

Ronan, Jessica, Georgia, Blake, Maya, Nathan, Nathan, Jessica, Hazel, Conor, Eoin, Ciaran, Molly, Mrs Doran, Miss McFadyen.

Points Discussed

  1. Litter Rota – we discussed the new litter picking rota. Mrs Doran is checking with the janitor to find out where the litter pickers are. P2 are going to start week beginning 27/11/17 to help pick up litter in the playground.
  2. Switch Off Fortnight – We discussed that every class made a pledge and we would do secret inspections when the teachers weren’t in. Almost every class kept their pledge for the first week, except P5/6 and P2 who forgot to turn off their whiteboards. Their Eco representatives will report back to them.
  3. School Eco Code – We discussed creating a new school eco code. Ciaran suggested having a competition. We will discuss further next week.

P4/5 at the Gallery of Modern Art

On Monday, P4/5 plus Mrs Doran’s P4s were very excited for our trip to the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art. For most of us it was our first time at this gallery!

The focus of our trip was to take part in a Design and Printmaking workshop.

For the workshop we studied and discussed two pieces of famous art – one a print and one a sculpture. The print was made by Andy Warhol and the sculpture by Eduardo Paolozzi. We began by making our own drawings of these artworks, which we would then use as inspiration for our own prints. After we had chosen what we wanted to make a print of, we used polystyrene blocks, printing ink and rollers to complete our creation!

As you can see we had great fun, and were even complimented on how good our behavior and attention was!

Many thanks to Mrs McGowan and Mrs Kusztelak for accompanying us, and Annette at GoMA for running our workshop.

Monday 27th November

hello from Primary 6/7,

This week we have explored I.C.T and how it can support our learning both in and out of the classroom. We have been enjoying using Sketch Nation and designed our own games, we have learned how to create players using moving images and even adapt our games so we star as the players in our games.

We are also beginning to explore Glow and the different features we can use in Microsoft 365, in the coming weeks we will learn how to create Sways, Microsoft Teams and use the class notebook both in class and for homework. We can see the benefits of being literate in technology plus it’s great fun!

As part of our homework we were taking part in a maths challenge on Sumdog, it’s great to see at the end of each block, the progress we have made and which areas we need to work on. Miss Jackson was happy that Primary 6/7 made it into the top teens of the North Lanarkshire leaderboard, great achievement considering we didn’t enter the challenge until quite late on.

As well as I.C.T, we have been looking at another French artist, Renoir. We have enjoyed learning about this impressionist and his works of art. As oil pastels and paint were his preferred medium, we have been using these to create a self portrait of the artist himself. We will update later in the week with some of our artwork.

Friday 24th November 2017

This week, Primary One have been learning all about the properties of 2d shapes and 3d objects. The children really enjoyed drawing around shapes and going on a ‘Shape Hunt’ around the school. They had great fun finding their chosen shapes and checking for correct names and properties.

The children also did very well to write a recount of their trip to the cinema and remembered their writing targets throughout this task.

Well done, Primary One!

Sumdog in P4/5

This week P4/5 were excited to receive their own login for the popular Maths game Sumdog. They have been working hard to take part in the North Lanarkshire Competition which ends tonight!

Currently we are in 60th place out of 208 classes, which is something to be celebrated! However there is still one night left to move even further up in the rankings.
