This week our Primary Three scientists have been investigating how sound travels, and the effect that distance can have on sound.
We learned that sound travels through vibrations and waves which we were able to feel on our own throats. We then tested how distance can affect the way we hear sounds, first by shaking a maraca at various areas of the school and seeing if we can still hear it from the chalkboard, before doing the same with a person speaking at normal voice level.
We then looked at one of the most famous Scottish inventions – the telephone, before trying to make string telephones from plastic cups.
Our string telephones were a success! We learned that the sound could only travel through the string if we pulled it tight to allow the vibrations to move from cup to cup.
Well done P3 Scientists!!
