P4/5 decided to make the most of the remaining snow this week by conducting their own investigation!
We took a short break from Space to explore The Water Cycle due to interest in the recent weather. We learned about the stages of the cycle and the different states of water.
We were interested in finding out what happens to water when snow melts. Would the melted water have a higher or lower volume than the snow? We worked in teams of 3 to fill a jar with snow. We then measured the snow and made our predictions. Most of us thought the water would be equal to or higher than the snow. We left our jars to melt overnight.
Today we came in to find our jars full of water, and were able to measure and compare. The water level was lower than the snow, meaning that the snow actually had a higher volume! We learned that this is because of the air trapped inside the snow alongside the water.
What an interesting investigation!
