Primary 7 Term 4 Curriculum Letter

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We hope you all had a fantastic Easter holiday and it was lovely speaking to you all at Parent’s Night.

We would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the children on making their Sacrament of Confirmation. It was a beautiful service and the children, along with their families, worked very hard to prepare for this sacrament.

This term will be particularly busy for our Primary 7 children as they head off to Kilbowie and continue their preparation for high school and planning their leavers’ events.

Once again this letter will provide you with a brief overview of the learning that will take place this term in Primary 7.

Literacy

The children will continue to follow North Lanarkshire’s Active Literacy programme for Spelling, Reading, Writing and Listening and Talking. This programme will help to develop further their literacy skills and provide exciting and new challenges.

This term the children will complete one group novel with a text suitable for their age and stage. This will be an opportunity for the children to apply all of their prior learning and demonstrate their ability and understanding of the Active Literacy Strategies. The novels will be read at home by the children and there will be reading homework on a weekly basis. The children should be encouraged to complete all reading homework on the allocated nights as the classwork will coincide with the reading homework.

Numeracy

This term, Primary 7 will explore volume and weight, expressions and equations, patterns and relationships, angles, negative numbers and maps and coordinates. It is important that the pupils continue to practise their times tables at home to support their numeracy. The children will have the opportunity to learn these skills and concepts through a mixture of both active and written tasks. This will enable the children to apply their learning across contexts and see a real purpose to their learning.

Health and Wellbeing

This children’s Health and Wellbeing topic will link to Religious Education this term as the children will explore God’s Loving Plan. This programme helps children to develop healthy and respectful attitudes to their bodies and to relationships with families and friends.

This term in Physical Education the children will develop their skills in striking and fielding. The children will participate in a variety of games which challenge their team work, co-ordination, spatial awareness and stamina.

Interdisciplinary Learning

The children of Primary 7 will be exploring ‘18th Century Scotland’ this term. This theme will provide opportunities for the children to examine historical Scottish society by exploring the Highland Clans and the lives of Scottish people during this time period which they will then compare with our current society. The children will apply their learning across the curriculum with a particular focus within the curriculum areas of Social Studies, Expressive Arts and Technologies.

Science

Primary 7 will be exploring an exciting science topic this term which is Forces. The children will look at friction, magnetic, electrostatic and gravitational forces and will also explore floating and sinking.

Religious Education

Religious Education will be taught through the ‘This Is Our Faith’ programme. This term Primary 7 will explore Holy Week, Eastertide, Pentecost and Trinity Sunday.

Homework

The children’s homework will help to support their on-going classwork and I would appreciate your support in ensuring the children keep up with all homework tasks.
Many thanks,

Miss McShane

Primary 4/3 Curriculum Update

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We hope you had a wonderful Easter holiday. It was lovely to see all of you at parents evening and we are grateful for your continued support. The following is a brief overview of the learning which will take place in Primary 4/3 this term.

Literacy

We will continue to follow the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy Programme to support learning in spelling, phonics, reading and writing.  Children will develop fluency and comprehension skills whilst exploring their novel and will complete a range of associated written tasks to deepen their understanding of the text.

Monkeys

Children will continue to work on the Stage 4 Active Literacy Programme; exploring units 7 and 8 which will include phoneme representations ‘ow’ and ‘oi’.  Furthermore, they will continue to apply a range of spelling strategies and rules to support their spelling of taught and unfamiliar words.

Penguins

Children will continue to develop their phonological knowledge and spelling whilst focusing on the phonemes ‘u, gn, t, dge, o, ch and ti’ and their weekly common words.

Writing

Children will focus on narrative, explanation and persuasive genres and will utilise their learning across the curriculum in their written pieces.

Maths

In numeracy, children will continue to develop their mental agility through Number Talks and will extend their knowledge of division and patterns and relationships.  Furthermore, they will explore measure, angles and symmetry.

R.M.E.

This will be a very special term for the boys and girls in Primary 4 preparing for and celebrating their First Holy Communion.  The children will also learn about Mary and deepen their understanding of the word of God and how to celebrate fully in the celebration of Mass.

Health & Wellbeing

In Term 4, the children will develop their striking, fielding and athletics skills in preparation for Sports Day.  In addition, children will develop an understanding of the human body and of daily personal hygiene routines.

A reminder that our P.E. days are Mondays and Thursdays and we would appreciate if children could bring their full P.E. kit into school on a Monday and take it home on Friday.  Furthermore, we would be grateful if children could refrain from wearing jewellery on P.E days.

Social Studies

This term our interdisciplinary learning will have an Enterprise theme and children will explore different types of jobs involved in running a business. The children will be encouraged to participate fully in the decision making process and to listen and share their views during discussions.  They will utilise their knowledge of money to budget and consider different ways in which they can make a profit for charity.  They will work collaboratively to ensure the success of their enterprise project.

Many thanks for your continued support.  Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.

Kind Regards,

Mrs Bridge/Miss Peattie

Primary 6 Curriculum Letter (Term 4)

Primary 6 Parent Letter

I can’t quite believe Term 4 is upon us already. Time clearly flies when you are learning and having fun. I am very proud of what the children achieved in Term 3 and I hope you all enjoyed your Easter break – it was well deserved. Term 4 is going to be particularly busy with a big focus on our summer show. The Primary 6’s and 7’s will be doing Aladdin.

Literacy

The children will continue with the same North Lanarkshire Active Literacy Programme for Spelling, Reading, Writing and Talking and Listening in Term 4. They will cover two novels this term and will be continuing with the same comprehension strategies for our reading, gaining confidence in these as the term progresses. The novels that will be covered this term are; The Eleventh Orphan, The Borrowers, Kensuke’s Kingdom, Why The Whales Came and a variety of Rapid Readers books. Our main focus throughout our writing lessons this term will be ‘discursive writing’, where the children will be learning to write about two points of view and compare and discuss these.

Maths

In Term 4 we will be looking at a variety of maths concepts including; Fractions, Expressions and Equations, Maps and Co-ordinates, Angles and Negative Numbers. Again, we will be using the active approaches from the Heinemann Active planners along with the Teejay textbooks. Please ensure that your child is continuing to learn all of their times tables from 2-10 at home. This is crucial for them to increase the pace of their work.

Health and Wellbeing

P.E this term will focus on ‘Striking and Fielding’ and this should set the children in good stead for sports day in June. With nice weather promised in May, the children should hopefully get outside to fully embrace this programme. Our P.E days remain a Monday and a Thursday and could you please ensure that your child has their kit in every Monday for the rest of the week. Also, in Health and Wellbeing this term the children will be covering the ‘God’s Loving Plan’ programme.

Social Studies

The children of Primary 6 will be exploring ‘Britain’s Cultural Diversity’ this term. We will be linking this to our summer show as much as we can. The children will apply their learning across the curriculum with a particular focus within the curriculum areas of Social Studies, Expressive Arts and Technologies.

R.E

During our R.E lessons we will be focusing on ‘Eastertide’, ‘Pentecost and the Trinity’ and ‘Mass’ along with the ‘God’s Loving Plan’ programme at the end of the term. I’d like to say a massive well done to the boys and girls for making their Sacrament of Confirmation. A lot of hard work, time and effort went into making this a success and it really paid off. The children were fabulous!

If you have any queries don’t hesitate to use your child’s diary as a means of contact with myself.

Thank you again for all of your support so far this year.
