Dear Parent/Guardian,

I hope you all had a lovely Easter break. We are already working hard and are excited about the fun events which will be taking place this term. This is a brief outline of the work which we will be undertaking within the class during the fourth term.

Literacy

The children will continue to follow the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy Programme in spelling and phonics. They will learn phonics, spelling rules, common words and tricky words (au family phoneme, silent letters, singular/plurals and ed spelling rules) which will be consolidated through class work and homework. The children will also be consolidating words from the spelling and phonics programme as well as learning extension words. This term the children will be reading a novel and working on a media block. They will continue to develop their understanding by using the reading strategies. Within Big Writing the children will be encouraged to use more challenging vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation (V.C.O.P.) within the genres of Narrative, Persuasive and Information.

Numeracy

In Primary 5F the children will develop their understanding of Measure (Volume and Weight), Decimal Fractions, Expressions and Equations, Patterns and Relationships, Angels, Data and Analysis, Maps and Coordinates and ideas of change and uncertainty. We will also be consolidating learning from the Numeracy programme. The children will participate in Active Maths, partner work and written tasks.

Religious Education

The children have already enjoyed learning about the events and significance of Holy Week. They will continue to develop their understanding of Mary; celebrating Mary in the Catholic tradition and personal and communal prayer. The children will also be learning about Creation and Baptism; Jesus’ Passion, Death and Resurrection, eternal life and about God as Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. The children will deepen their understanding of Pentecost; Holy Spirit and Prophecy.

Health and Wellbeing

The children have thoroughly enjoyed attending Swimming at Wishaw Sports Centre from 19th March until 30th April. For the remainder of the term the children will be working with Sports Coaches on Games and with myself on Athletics and Striking and Fielding. Please ensure your child brings their gym kit every week. As part of our Health and Wellbeing we will be working in partnership with Muirhouse Primary focusing on Outdoor Learning; being active in the local environment, den building, information finding, leaf identification and participating in a scavenger hunt.

Science

In Primary 5F we will learn about Vibration and Waves. With Waves will focus on Sound Waves (animal communication) and how sound vibrations are carried. Additionally we will explore properties of Light (Light/Reflection/Shadow/Colour).

Social Subjects

For our final term our Interdisciplinary Learning will focus on Trains, Planes and Automobiles. Our learning will focus on exploring ways journeys can be made. The children will be considering the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of transport and discuss their impact on the environment. We will research ways in which we can live in a more environmentally-responsible way. The class will compare their local area with contrasting areas investigating the similarities and differences of weather and the physical environment, discussing the impact of living things and how the land is used.

Thank you in advance for your support this term, please use your child’s homework diary to communicate any concerns/comments.

Kind Regards,

Mrs Debbie Ferns
