November 2018

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I hope you all had a lovely October week. We are already working hard and are excited about the fun events which will be taking place this term. We will be very busy preparing for our St. Andrew’s Day performance and the Carol Service. This is a brief outline of the work which we will be undertaking within the class during the second term.

Literacy

The children will continue to follow the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy Programme in spelling and phonics. They will learn phoneme families (j, k and sh), spelling rules (an introduction to prefixes and suffixes), common words and tricky words which will be consolidated through class work and homework. The children will be reading a novel and also working on non-fiction reading this term. As part of the reading programme the children will continue to develop their use of the reading strategies while reading non-fiction and their novels. Within Big Writing the children will continue to develop their use of vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation (V.C.O.P.) within the genres of narrative and instructional/procedural.

 Numeracy

In Primary 5 the children will develop their understanding of 2D Shape (polygons and special triangles) and 3D Objects (recognise 3D objects and their properties), Money (calculations of money; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, use of money within the world and money word problems), Time (12 and 24 hour clock, durations, using timetables and calendars), Multiplication and Division (learning multiplication and division facts of all tables up to and including the 10 times table), and Multiples, Factors and Primes (identifying multiples and factors of whole numbers) this term. The children will participate in Active Maths, partner work and written tasks.

Religious Education

During the second term the learning will focus on November (Scottish Faith Heritage and the Faithful Departed) and Healing (Jesus and the Sacraments). We will also be learning about Advent (signs, symbols and themes of Advent.

Health and Wellbeing

In P.E. the children will be developing their skills within Central Net and Wall Games; Volleyball and Squash. The children will learn to participate cooperatively and competitively with their peers. They will develop their ability to move a ball with their hands or a racket into a desired space. As part of the Health and Wellbeing programme the children have already been learning about how they record their achievements in school through their Learning Journeys and how their achievements are celebrated outside of school. The children will be learning about the importance of feeling included and including others using Christmas as our stimulus for learning.

Interdisciplinary Learning

Our topic this term will focus on ‘Children’s Rights’. The children will learn about the rights that they are entitled to under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We will look into the past focusing on the lives of children in New Lanark and how this period shaped Scottish society. The children will build their own picture of Scotland’s heritage through learning how things have improved for children in Scotland over the years. They will make comparisons between what life was like for children in New Lanark and their own lives today.

Science

Primary 5 will be learning about materials. We will explore substances (separating and dissolving) and research the earth’s surface and chemical reactions. As a class we will carry out experiments involving separating and dissolving substances.

Thank you in advance for your support this term, please use your child’s homework diary to communicate any concerns/comments.

Kind Regards,

Mrs Debbie Ferns
