Dear Parent/Guardian,

We cannot believe term one is over already, what a quick and great term it was for us in Primary 4!

Primary 4 have had a fantastic start to the new term and we are excited to share with you what we will be learning.

Literacy

The children are coping well with their Active Literacy programmes and will continue to follow these for Spelling, Reading, Writing and Listening and Talking.

The children have successfully completed their modelling block and are now reading their own novels, which they are all loving. Gryffindor are currently reading Best Dog in the World and will go on to read Grey Friar’s Bobby. Slitherin are currently reading Alex the Walking Accident and will go on to complete Through the Cat Flap. Hufflepuff will continue to read a variety of books and work their way through the reading programme. The Potter spelling group will focus on Unit 3 and 4 of the active literacy programme, which includes the phonemes ‘ie’ and ‘oe’. The Weasley spelling group will focus on the phonemes ‘aw’, ‘oi;’, ‘au’, ‘ew’, ‘ow’ and ‘ou’ as well as their weekly common words.

In writing this term children will be focusing on Information Reports and Narrative writing. We are looking forward to writing some amazing reports on The Rainforest.

Numeracy

In Maths this term we will be learning about Fractions, Data Analysis, Multiplication and Division and also Symmetry. In Fractions children will be looking at halves, thirds, quarters, fifths and tenths. Children will also explore tally charts, bar graphs and Carrol diagrams in Data Analysis. Children will be learning to multiply and divide by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10. In addition, we will be continuing to improve our mental agility through Number Talks, which involves finding and discussing a variety of strategies for solving a problem..

Health and Wellbeing

This term in Physical Education the children will be continuing to develop their skills in fitness and they will also be learning yoga and dance. The children will also explore healthy foods and the world of work..

Interdisciplinary Learning

Our topic this term is ‘The Rainforest’. The children are so excited to learn about different animals in the rainforest and learn more about their habitats. They will also explore the different layers of the Rainforest as well as the weather there. The children will also compare living things in Scotland to living things in the Rainforest.

Science

Primary 4 will learn about Biodiversity this term. They will be looking at food chains and ecosystems. They will also explore how human activity can have a negative impact on food chains and what they can do to improve this.

Religious Education

In Religious Education this term children will be learning about the life of Jesus and the story of Advent. In addition to this children will also focus on other faith communities’ belief in God through exploring Islam.

Keep up to date with our learning through twitter.

Many thanks,

Miss Paterson and Primary 4.
