A busy week in P4…

What a hard-working bunch we’ve been this week! It all started with Queen Victoria…

We carried out some internet research about her in the ICT suite and recorded our notes onto a Word document…

Then, we looked at Queen Victoria’s reign (the time that she was Queen) and placed all the important things that happened on a human timeline…

After that, we learned a bit more about Queen Victoria. Some people have said that she was an unhappy, or even grumpy, Queen and we decided to investigate whether or not this was true. We looked at lots of pictures and things that people said about her in the past…

We had to decide if we believed that Queen Victoria was unhappy, sad or grumpy by looking at the evidence. We had to be able to justify what we said. We decided that:

  • She never smiled in her portraits because she had to pose for them and wouldn’t have been able to smile that long!
  • She didn’t smile often in photos because it wasn’t fashionable to do that in Victorian times.
  • She wasn’t grumpy because many people, including her own granddaughter, talked about how funny she could be.
  • She was sad at times because her husband died and she missed him very much.

On top of all that, we’ve been developing our mental strategies for addition and subtraction. We took part in a maths carousel lesson that allowed us to practise all our strategies. We’re getting really good at it!

Well done P4!!

Puns in pr7!

Q-“Cows standing in a field. How do you know which one is on holiday? ”

A- “The one with the wee calf!”

heehee!

Primary 7 have had great fun with puns this week! We were playing around with words and homophones to make witty puns and headlines.

imageimageimageimageimage

This afternoon we really enjoyed a co-operative task where we were given headlines and we had to match them to newspaper stories. We then had to explain the pun in each one. Maybe one day some of us will be famous journalists!

Happy New Year from Pr7!

Primary seven are are delighted to be back and straight into Confirmation Preparation. We are due to be confirmed on the 4th February and this week we have been singing hymns, studying saints and learning about what Jesus did when filled with the Holy Spirit.

Bishop Toal came into visit us on Thursday and told us all about the Confirmation ceremony. He talked to us about his role as Bishop and he even passed around his cross. It was really heavy! He explain about his staff which is called a “Crosier” and he told us all about the Good Shepherd which is on the top of his Crosier. He let us see his special hat called the Mitre. We think he really enjoyed getting to know us a little better.

Our next steps are learning about the Pentecost story and the gifts and fruits of the Spirit.

Primary 1/2 update….

We learned how to access and use google earth this week as part of our topic. We spent time locating our local area and the street that our school is on. Then we explored typical streets in Townhead, looking at different types of houses and other buildings. It was very interesting.

Some me of us used the iPads and others used the smart board. We also spent time looking at street furniture when we were in the ICT room and managed to match all of the labels to the correct items like lamp posts, pavement, sign post and kerb.

We have been using ABC music to learn about keeping the beat and playing the correct sound on the right beat. It was tricky!

We worked on using our adding skills to play games…it was really good fun.

A P4 update…

Last week finished off with P4 sharing their wonderful Christmas Books with the lovely children in P2/3…

This week, we left Christmas behind us and looked to our new term. We were introduced to our new novels that we’ll be studying in class. As well as learning our Reading Strategies, we’ve been working hard on handwriting and presentation. Here are some examples of our fabulous work…

In maths, we’re continuing with our mental strategies for addition and subtraction. We’ve been using number lines, hundred squares and lots of ICT games to help us. We’ve been playing partner games too…

We have also been introduced to our new topic this week. We’re going to learn all about the Victorians. How exciting! We took part in a carousel lesson to decide what we already knew, what we wanted to find out and how we wanted to learn it…

Mrs McLean and Miss Dunbar are now busy planning our topic based on what we told them. Here’s some things that we want to know:

  • When did they live?
  • What was school like?
  • Why did they not have flushing toilets? (seems we have a fascination with toilets in P4!)
  • What were their toys and games like?
  • What did they do for fun?
  • What did they eat?

Here’s how we want to learn:

  • Make models
  • Make Victorian food
  • Play Victorian games
  • Visit a museum
  • Study and make our own Victorian art
  • Look on the internet

Well P4, your wish is our command! We’d better get busy…

Primary 5 Simply The Best!

What a great start to the New Year. Primary 5 won The Cool Class Cup the first week back. Well done children it was truly deserved!

This week we have been very busy in class. In Numeracy we have been learning all about different number patterns and sequences.

Our new topic this term is The Vikings and we started on our design for our Viking shields. They looked super!

We were also learning about Rights Respecting Schools and the children worked in their co-operative learning groups to decide on what factors they considered important to achieve this within St. Bartholomew’s.

Primary 1/2 have a busy start to the week.

Today in primary 1, we worked on our addition skills again. Mrs Carlin is very impressed with us! We all understand what it’s all about….

imageAlso primary 2 are investigating number triangles – these are clever triangles that help us write addition and subtraction number stories. When we use them, we can see the link between adding and subtracting…

imageIn PE, we are completing our block on gymnastics. Today we were exploring rolling – we learned to do forward rolls and we taught our partner to do a fantastic log roll..

After PE, we started to look at the Church. This will be our main focus for RE over the next few weeks. We looked at ewtn kids website to find out the important objects that are found in a church. Then we visited our own Oratory to see what important objects were there. We discovered that almost all of the things found in a church are in our Oratory – in fact we have our very own little church right at the centre of our school. We all feel really special…

Over the last weeks we have been exploring the Year of Mercy and have completed some work on what it means to show mercy towards others. Here are some photos of our wall display…image

Primary 1 are back!

In primary 1 this week we talked in groups about what Santa got us for Christmas. It was important that only one group member spoke at a time while the other members listened. We have been trying hard to take turns when people are speaking.

After our discussion we wrote a story about Christmas Day. Some of us have been sounding out and writing by ourselves. Our writing is getting better every day.

During maths time we have been learning how to add two number together! We used number tiles to help us. Miss Duffy gave us a tricky sum and we had to jump along the number line to get the answer!

Primary 1/2 are glad to be back!!!

We are all glad to be back at school. We had a wonderful holiday and are all set to work hard again this year!

This week in ICT we looked at plans of the school and learned what a plan is and what it looks like.

One of the sixth year pupils from St Ambrose, Daniel, came to work with us again this week. He helped us learn about being proud and being humble. We all agreed that Humble Henry was the best friend to choose.

We can make Carroll Diagrams!

In Maths Primary 2 have been learning about sorting information on Carroll Diagrams. We made lots of different diagrams on the whiteboard to make sure we knew how to do it and we played a fun game on the smartboard about sorting shapes. Then we worked in pairs to cut out lots of different shapes and sort them into groups of colours and patterns. When we had finished we stuck them onto our Carroll Diagram and showed them to Miss Connor. She was so impressed she took lots of pictures of them!
