STEM WEEK – UPDATE FOR FRIDAY 12 JUNE 2020

Good morning boys and girls ,

I hope you are all up, have had breakfast and are ready to continue with your weekly activities.

R.E.

Close your eyes, join your hands and let us begin the day with our morning prayer.

God our Father

As we prepare to begin our work

We ask you to help us to use properly the many gifts you have given us

So that we may fully benefit from our day together.

During the month of May we honoured Our Lady. We created a special altar, said decades of the rosary and completed lots of different activities that reminded us how important Our Lady is.

The month of June is the month of The Sacred Heart of Jesus. The heart is seen as the essence of a person.  Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is devotion to Jesus Christ Himself. Next week (19th June) we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, this always takes place 19 days after Pentecost.

Throughout the Gospel, we experience the outpouring of Jesus’ love from His heart. We experience this love from the miracle stories, His forgiveness of sinners and His compassion for those who are suffering. Kind and caring are two words that come to mind when I think of Jesus, can you think of more words that can be used to describe Him?

Look closely at the image of The Sacred Heart of Jesus. What do you notice about His heart? Why do you think this is? What does it symbolise? Think of the things that happened in Jesus’ life to help you understand why Jesus’ heart is shown like this.

Do you have an image of The Sacred Heart of Jesus in your home?

Task 1

  • Use the image of The Sacred Heart that has been included or find an image from the internet and use it as a stimulus to create your own picture of The Sacred Heart of Jesus. When you have finished your drawing, display it proudly in your home. This can be a special place for you to pray to The Sacred Heart of Jesus over the course of this month.
  • I have also attached an image of The Sacred Heart of Jesus that you can choose to colour if drawing the image is too tricky.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus colouring page

We say a special devotion to The Sacred Heart of Jesus. Try saying this special prayer every day during the rest of June.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in Thee.

Task 2

Get a piece of paper, fold it in half and cut half a heart shape. Younger pupils may need some help from an adult for this. When it is open a full heart shape will be visible. Decorate the paper and then stick it on top of another sheet of paper. You should then have a blank heart shape on your paper. Write the special devotion to The Sacred Heart of Jesus in the centre of your heart.

Decorate this and email it to your teacher or, with permission, upload it onto TWITTER.

R.E – Wednesday 10th June

Happy Wednesday everyone.

Today you will be learning about The Pope. Have a look at the powerpoint below.

Who is The Pope

Every pope has three main jobs:

  • He teaches us by writing and preaching about Jesus.
  • He governs, or leads, us with the power handed down to him from St. Peter.
  • He sanctifies us, or helps make us holy, through prayer and the sacraments.

Although The Pope has just three primary jobs, he has many names, or titles. Fill in the missing vowels to find just five of his many titles. (Use the powerpoint to help you.)

To show that the pope is the spiritual father of all Catholics, he is called the

H____LY     F____TH____R.

To show that he is the head of a very special diocese, he is called the

B____SH____P       ____F       R____M____.

To show that he represents Jesus on earth, he is called the

V____C____R   ____F     J____S____S   CHR____ST.

To show that he is the head of the Church, he is called the

S___PR____M___       P____NT____FF.

To show that he is carrying out Jesus’ command to help others, he is called the

S____RV____NT       ____F     TH____       S____RV____NTS     ____F

Here is a picture for you to colour in.

Extension Activity

You are going to research our current Pope. You must include the following:

  • The Pope’s real name and reason for their chosen name as Pope.
  • Their date and place of birth
  • When they began their papacy
  • 5 interesting facts about them

Please send your work to gw14waughamanda@glow.sch.uk or tweet us @St_BarbarasPS

Have a great day!

Message from the Executive Director: Schools’ Update

Dear Parent,

Please find a schools’ update below. We will issue specific information in respect of St. Barbara’s to you later this month.

Schools update – 8 June 2020

We’re working on plans to make schools as safe as possible for our children and young people when they return in August. Take a look at this video so you know the principles that we are working to.

Understandably you will have lots of other questions on issues that we’re still working on. Please bear with us and we will make more announcements as soon as we can.

Friday Update: 29th May 2020

Good morning everyone,

It’s hard to believe that we have reached the end of another week and that we are on the brink of a new month as well! Better still…the weekend is just a few hours away and it will soon be time to put the pencils and pens down and have some fun!

I hope that you were all out clapping and making some noise for our wonderful NHS staff, Carers  and keyworkers last night!

Once again I have really enjoyed looking at all of your posts on Twitter this week; your Sports’ Day pictures and video clips were amazing. I also loved the healthy snacks too.

Chryston HUB

Parents, next week will be a little different for everyone as many of our staff will be working in Chryston HUB. On the days they are working in the HUB, staff will not be uploading work for children. However there are plenty of activities on the home-learning grids which you will find on the top-right section of the home webpage.

The timetable below indicates the days when work will not be uploaded for specific classes:

Monday 1st June: Primary 1 (Miss McEleney) and Primary 3 (Miss McMullen)

Tuesday 2nd June: Primary 1 (Mrs Connolly/Mrs MacLeod), Primary 5/4 (Mrs Grant) and Primary 2 (Miss Shreenan)

Wednesday 3rd June: Primary 1 (Miss McEleney), Primary 2 (Miss Shreenan) and Primary 3 (Miss McMullen)

Thursday 4th June: Primary 4/3 (Mrs Boyce)

Friday 5th June: Primary 4/3 (Mrs Boyce) and Primary 1 (Mrs MacLeod/Mrs Connolly)

So just before the weekend begins, let’s take a few moments to remember all of our fabulous NHS staff,  all of the carers, all of the keyworkers, all of our wonderful staff, all of your parents and the adults who have been supporting you at home this week. We’ll also think about Fr. Campbell who has been saying Mass every day and remembering all of us in his prayers.

We also need to think about those who are ill in hospital and at home at present as well as those who have died in recent weeks.

We now need to remember all of you – our fantastic  children – who have been working so hard again this week! Well done all of you!

We ask God to bless each and every one of us today and to look after us all this weekend.  Together, let’s say a Hail Mary…

Now boys and girls, it is Friday!

I really think that you will be needing sunhats and sun cream this weekend! It’s the end of a long month…so how about an extra, sneaky playtime in the sunshine? I think that you deserve it after all of your hard work this week.

I hope that you, all of your families, all of our super staff and Fr. Campbell have a lovely, relaxing weekend. Enjoy!

Virtual Sports’ Day is HERE! Tuesday 26th May 2020

Good Morning everyone and welcome to our first ever Virtual Sports’ Day!

Today, activities have been set for the whole school to enjoy.

We hope that you enjoy the day and we ask you to  upload pictures onto Twitter or to email pictures to your child’s class teacher. Thank you!

Just like every day, we will begin with the morning prayer.

God our Father

As we prepare to begin our work

We ask you to help us to use properly the many gifts you have given us

So that we may fully benefit from our day together. Amen.

   Happy Eid!

Health and Wellbeing…let the fun BEGIN!

Today is Sports’ Day!!!  I know it’s different from any sports’ day that we’ve ever had but we can still have lots of fun!  So for health and wellbeing today I want you to follow the grid with lots of suggested activities.  Don’t worry if you can’t do some activities just adapt them to suit yourselves.  The important rule today is to exercise and have FUN!

Sport’s Day

Healthy Snack Ideas

R.E.

After all of the fun of Sports’ Day, time to relax and focus on the R.E. tasks below.

During Sunday’s Gospel we heard about Jesus praying for his friends and for us.  He wanted us to be one, to be united in love, as closely as Jesus and God the Father are united in love.  So, let’s think about how we can be more like that.

After Sunday’s Gospel Father Campbell spoke about how it is now 9 weeks since we have been together in the Church.  He spoke about what people were missing about coming together for Mass.  These feelings we have about missing things were the same feelings that the disciples felt when Jesus ascended into Heaven.  Jesus prayed for his disciples and the disciples prayed to help them be closer to Jesus.

Watch this short video to help us reflect on Sunday’s Gospel.

What could we do to help us be united in love just like Jesus wanted us to be?  Perhaps you have a favourite book and could read it to your little brother or sister. Perhaps you enjoy making music; you could play it over the phone for a loved one.   Maybe you could do a very helpful thing around the house for your parents without being asked.  Today I would like you to pick an act of kindness to do for someone else and help put a big smile on that person’s face!  Have a look at some more ideas below:

Now write down your act of kindness inside a heart and decorate it.

Please send  your pictures to your teacher’s email address or Tweet us @St_BarbarasPS.  We love seeing your pictures.

We all hope that you enjoyed an active, fun day. See you tomorrow!

Weekly Update: Thursday 21st May

Good Morning Everyone!

The Feast of the Ascension

Welcome to this week’s update which is on Thursday due to the bank holidays tomorrow and Monday.

It has been just fabulous to see all of the work that has been going on across the school this week, even if you were completing it at home. I have loved looking at all of the photographs of your healthy snacks; you certainly have been really creative. They all looked delicious.

I’ve also really enjoyed looking at all of your hard work in jotters, your pictures and collages, outdoor learning and even stop motion videos. Well done, everyone!

Primary 4, your video was just beautiful and I hope that everyone else saw it too. If not, you can access it through the Parish website. Well done to all of you and to your families. A special, ‘Well Done’ to all of your friends in Primary 5/4 and Primary 4/3 who have supported you as well as to the staff who all made it possible. I would like to thank Fr. Campbell for leading it (which took several attempts to make sure that he held the candle in the correct hand!) so well.

Parents, thank you so much for your continuing help in supporting  the children at home. I know that it is extremely difficult for you at times but I really appreciate your effort.

Teaching and Support Staff, thank you for  all that you are doing for the children daily and behind the scenes; I greatly appreciate all that you do.

Finally, well done to all of our St. Barbara’s Superstars, our children! As always, you are a credit to your families and to all of our school community. Well, today we would have been at church as it is the Feast of the Ascension; Fr. Campbell has been on the phone already because he wanted to remind me to remind all of you (!) that you have to have a special, sneaky extra playtime today! Great news!

Next Tuesday the whole day is going to be a Virtual Sports’ Day – so look out for more information on the website!

So everyone – it’s Thursday, it’s the holiday weekend  which means that once you have finished your work and had a long playtime, it’s Golden Time! I hope that you have a lovely, long weekend with your families.

Friday Update: 15th May 2020

Good Morning everyone,

I hope that you have had a very good week so far and I’m sure that you are all looking forward to the weekend!

It has been great to see more of your work so please, keep sending it in. In fact I have enjoyed looking at your work so much I think that you should treat yourselves to a little extra Golden Time today!

First Holy Communion

On Sunday we should have been celebrating First Holy Communion with the Primary 4 children, their families, Fr Campbell and all of our staff. Unfortunately this has had to be postponed leaving everyone very disappointed.

Why not log on to St. Barbara’s Parish website and follow us on Twitter to see a special message this weekend. Please remember all of the children and their families in your thoughts and prayers at this special time.

Virtual Sports…are you up for the challenge?

On Tuesday 26th May we are going to celebrate Sports’ Day with a whole school day of activities and fun for all of the family!

There will be an action-packed grid  full of sporty tasks which you can do from home – inside and out.

Look out for further information  next week and remember to take lots of pictures!

It has ARRIVED!! The NLC SUMDOG Challenge begins today!

Please log on and do your very best today and through all of next week. Good luck!

P. 7 Transition

Updated information from OLHS was uploaded onto Twitter earlier in the week. The transition process is continuing between staff in St. Barbara’s and  the high school.

I emailed a letter to parents of children intending to go to Chryston High on Wednesday. Can you please check that you have received this and let me know of any issues?

Feast of the Ascension: Thursday 21st May

Under normal circumstances all of the children would have been attending Mass next Thursday for the Feast of the Ascension. As this won’t be possible, Bishop Toal will be celebrating Mass on Thursday online at 11am for all of the school children in the Diocese. I will issue the link next week.

So just before the weekend begins, let’s take a few moments to remember all of our fabulous NHS staff, all of the keyworkers, all of our wonderful staff, all of your parents and the adults who have been supporting you at home this week. We’ll also think about Fr. Campbell who has been saying Mass every day and remembering all of us in his prayers.

We remember most especially the children in Primary 4 who would have received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion on Sunday – and all of their friends in class who were supporting them.

Let’s not forget about all of you – our fantastic children – who have been working so hard again this week! Well done all of you!

We ask God to bless each and every one of us today and to look after us all this weekend.  Together, let’s say a Hail Mary in English or in Spanish, you choose…

I hope that you all have a relaxing weekend.
