Friday 3rd April- Primary 7

Good morning Primary 7,

It is Friday again which means that you have completed 2 full weeks of home learning. Well done as I know it can be tricky to focus and concentrate on school tasks in an environment out with the classroom.

Let’s start today with a prayer. Close your eyes say our morning prayer and an Our Father.

Remember you have a few hours left to take part in the Sum Dog maths competition. The leader board is looking very close between a few pupils. I will post the name of the winner at the end of the day.

Complete the maths problems below, remember to read the questions carefully.

Maths Problems- Friday

Being active is a great way to keep you feeling positive! Complete a Joe Wicks workout. Go to the ‘P.E. with Joe’ section and let’s keep fit.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ

Here is a challenge for you all – can you create your own workout routine and get your family to join in?

To develop your spelling skills and expand your vocabulary select some challenging words from some books/newspapers/magazines, explore their definitions and select appropriate spelling strategies such as syllabification, phonological knowledge, word patterns, mnemonics, spelling rules etc. to ensure correct spelling.

Work hard today Primary 7 and I will post again this afternoon.

Primary 7- Thursday 2nd April

Good morning Primary 7,

It’s Thursday which means it’s time to get our imaginations flowing and do some creative writing. Today I would like you to use the picture below to write an interesting story. Remember to take care with your use of punctuation and try to challenge yourself by using some amazing descriptive vocabulary.

How did you discover this new planet? What is it like?     Does anyone live on this planet?

I would love to read your amazing stories, feel free to email them to me:

sreid@st-barbaras.n-lanark.sch.uk

I know how much you all love playing the Countdown number challenge in class so why not go on to the website below and see if you can reach your target number using the four number operations.

http://happysoft.org.uk/countdown/numgame.php

I hope you all had a chance to either watch or carry out yesterday’s science experiment. Who made an accurate hypothesis (predicted what would happen) and now understands why the diet can floated and the regular can sank?

If you aren’t too sure how the experiment worked here is an explanation:

How Does the Experiment Work?

The simple answer is that the density of the cans causes them to either float or sink. The cans of diet juice are less dense than water, so they float. The cans of regular juice are more dense than water so they sink.

Now you may be wondering why the density of the cans is different. The answer, is the type of sweetener used in each can.

  • Sugar is used to sweeten regular cans of juice, a lot of sugar. This large quantity of sugar causes the can to become more dense than water.
  • Artificial sweeteners are used in diet juice. However, a smaller amount of artificial sweetener is used which causes the can to be less dense than water.

So there you have it, even though the cans were the exact same shape, size and volume        (330 ml) the densities were different.

Have a terrific Thursday everyone and I look forward to reading some of your exciting stories. Remember to complete day 2 of your April maths calendar.

Second Level April Calendar

Hello again Primary 7,

During the month of April why not try a little bit of maths every day with a 2nd level April calendar. Go to #abitofmathseveryday on Twitter to access this calendar. It is a great way to consolidate some of the different maths concepts that we had been looking at in class. Try your best to do one every day and record the answers in the jotter that you have been given.

Wednesday 1st April- Primary 7

Good morning Primary 7,

Today marks the beginning of April, try and not play too many tricks on your family members today. Unfortunately this is another year we won’t be able to get Miss McEleney back, this just gives me another year to think of something really good to get my own back.

Today test your numeracy skills with this very fun and interactive maths challenge,

https://www.sporcle.com/games/Answer/speed-math-2

Lots of our teachers have been playing this game online and been getting extremely competitive. You can play this game as many times as you like, try to beat your current score each time. I have had lots of fun trying to top my best score. Good luck!

We have been learning all about The Titanic. We had planned to do some science experiments in class that focused on buoyancy however we never got to complete them. Let’s have a look at one today to give us a better understanding of what buoyancy is.

Something to think about before you start the experiment, why does a heavy boat float while a small rock sinks? Sometimes objects sink because they’re heavy, but other times it’s because they are buoyant!

Today you are going to see what happens when you put a diet can and ordinary can in a deep container of water. Will they float or sink?

I have listed the materials needed and the step by step approach you can take to complete this experiment at home however if you do not have the necessary materials you can watch the experiment via the link below.

https://www.stevespanglerscience.com/lab/experiments/sinking-soda-surprise/

Resources

  • Large Bucket or container
  • Water
  • Unopened diet can and unopened ordinary can (coke and diet coke for example)

Method

  1. Begin by filling a large container with water. The water should be deep enough so you can easily tell which cans are floating and sinking.
  2. Slowly place each can into the water one at a time. Make sure to tip the can on it’s side when you are placing it in the water so no air is trapped at the bottom of the can. If there is a bubble of air trapped at the bottom of the can, the results of the experiment will be impacted.
  3. Observe the cans as you place them in the water. Do they float or sink?
  4. Try to work out why the cans have reacted the way that they have.

Make predictions about what you think will happen and discuss the results with your parent or guardian. Who can remember what the scientific word is for making a prediction?

I look forward to hearing your predictions and will post the scientific explanation for this experiment tomorrow. Have fun!

Primary 7- Tuesday 31st March

Good morning Primary 7,

I hope everyone had a good night’s sleep and are ready to start a new day. Continue working through your learning grids to keep your brains active, there are lots of fun tasks to be completed.

Tune in to the Science Centre’s live broadcast at 10.00am this morning and write a short summary about what you have learned.

http://www.youtube.com/user/scienceshowbob

After the Easter holidays I am going to be setting you some tasks that encourage you to research WW2 as I know this was a topic you were all looking forward to learning about in school. Over the next few days you could record any facts that you already know about WW2 and any areas that you would like to explore. When you have created a list of questions you can email them to me and I will use them to plan out this topic.

I have created a Sum Dog competition that focuses on fractions, decimals and percentages. It would be great if as many of you as possible could participate in this competition and I will post the name of the winner on Friday afternoon. Come on Primary 7, bring out your competitive side!

I have set a reading comprehension task on First News that explores current news around the world. This task encourages you to read the articles carefully and explore a range of different questioning styles.

Remember to continue with personal reading every day, it is such a nice way to switch off and relax for a little bit of time.

Happy Monday Primary 7

Happy Monday Primary 7,

I hope you all had a nice weekend and are ready to start week 2 of home learning.

I thought it might be nice to start the week off by saying a little prayer for a variety of intentions. Use this five finger prayer guide to help you.

It is important to keep active during these times. I remember how much you all loved our boot camp sessions so here is a little activity you can try to get your heart rates up. Spell out your own name and the names of any members of your family. Enjoy!

Today select a chapter from a book. Having read it carefully, create five questions about it which you could give to one of your friends.

You should include different types of questions e.g. literal and inferential.

Keep working on your learning grids this week and post some pictures as I am missing you all and would like to see what you have been up to.

Mrs Butler 🙂

Primary 7-Friday 27th March

Good morning Primary 7,

It’s Friday which means that week 1 of home learning is nearly over. I am sure you have all been busy working on your learning grids this week and I would really like to see some pictures of the activities you have completed posted on Twitter or emailed to myself.

As your week has been very different from a normal school week perhaps you could write a short recount of what it has been like to learn at home and some of the things you have been doing.

I have attached a reading bingo grid below, this might be a fun way to do your personal reading for today. Maybe you could read a chapter or two to a sibling or your parent or guardian.

It would be great if you could all go on to Top Marks today and complete a Daily 10 challenge to get your brains working. Select level 6, Doubles/ Halves and up to 500. If you really want to challenge yourself you can select up to 1000. I will even let you select manual instead of setting a timer.

We have been exploring angles in maths why not see if you can photograph and measure angles around your house? Treat your family members to a little sing song and show them your knowledge of angles through our angles song to the tune of the YMCA.

To work on some life skills why don’t you make lunch for the people in your household today? It might be nice for whoever has been looking after you all week to get a little break.

Have a fantastic Friday and try to get outdoors for some fresh air this weekend. Stay safe Primary 7!

Mrs Butler 🙂

Thursday 26th March- Primary 7

Good morning Primary 7,

I hope that you are all keeping safe and trying your best to remain focused on your learning.

I have set up a reading and spelling challenge on Sum Dog that I would like you all to try and complete. These challenges will encourage you to revisit some affixes that we have looked at in class and different areas of punctuation.

Remember to do some personal reading and record this in your reading log.

To continue developing your mental maths skills you should sign up for Maths with Carol Vorderman. The website is www.themathsfactor.com. This is a great free resource and a fun way to do your number work.

I have uploaded a Spanish language challenge from the British Council website. Choose one or two of these activities to complete in order to educate yourselves about Spanish culture and develop your knowledge of the Spanish language.

Keep working on your activity grids and try hard to post pictures on Twitter so that I can see your smiling faces.

Have a terrific Thursday!

Primary 7 Study Ladder Login

Hello Primary 7,

If anyone would like access to Study Ladder and do not have their login details feel free to contact me via email and I will forward them on to you.

My email address is sreid@st-barbaras.n-lanark.sch.uk

This is a great interactive resource and another way to keep our brains active.

Primary 7- Wednesday 25th March

Good morning Primary 7,

I hope you are all up, have had your breakfast and are ready to start your day. Please spend some time today working on Sum Dog to ensure that we are continuing to improve our maths skills.

Perhaps when you are doing some personal reading today you could select some tricky words from your book and explore the definition of these words using a dictionary, this will help expand your vocabulary. David Walliams is releasing an audio story from The World’s Worst Children on Twitter everyday for the next 30 days. It might be a nice idea to sit down with a family member, have a snack and listen to one of these stories. What a nice way to relax!

The 25th of March is the feast of the Annunciation. The Annunciation is the day the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and asked her to be the mother of Jesus.  A nice way to celebrate this feast day would be to say a decade of the rosary.

Remember to keep working on activities from your grid and share some pictures on Twitter. Have a lovely day and I look forward to seeing some of your pictures later on.

Mrs Butler 🙂
