A Scottish afternoon in p1 and p1/2

We had a great afternoon on Thursday. Primary 1 and primary 1/2 got together and used our Scotland topic to learn new skills. We made porridge with Miss Purdon, designed Scottish thistles with Mrs Patterson, practised measuring with Mrs Devine and created our own Scottish buildings and structures. Some pupils also got the chance to play in our But “n” Ben. Mrs Simpson worked with a group of children who took photographs to evidence our learning. Check out our fabulous photos!

Talented pupils sharing their knowledge!

Mrs Simpson had an easy day in primary 1/2! First we had a clever primary 7 come and teach the children about Scotland from a book she had written herself. After lunch we had a fantastic presentation from a confident young lady in primary 4. Then some super stars from our own class shared their own Scotland books! Mrs Spowart and I will soon be out of a job!

This confident young lady captivated her p1/2 audience today. They learned lots of new facts.

Highland Dancing in p1/2

As part of our work on Scotland we wanted to learn more about Scottish Dancing. Mrs Simpson is a highland dance teacher and is giving us some beginners lessons. This week we learned that highland dancing requires stamina! We also learned 1st and 2nd positions of feet and hands.

Artwork inspired by Kate McLelland

As part of our Scotland topic, we read the book “There was a Wee Lassie who swallowed a Midgie.”

We love the pictures and in February the illustrator, Kate McLelland is going to visit primary 1 and primary 1/2.

Today in primary 1/2, we looked closely at some of her artwork and were inspired to try some of our own.

We love the ending to "There was a wee lassie who swallowed a midgie"

Scottish Castles with p1/2

Through our rights respecting schools work we know that every child has the right to a nationality. With this in mind p1/2 have started their new topic all about Scotland to find out about ours. We started by talking about what we already knew about Scotland, what we want to learn about and how we think we are going to find this out.

We drew pictures and recorded ourselves talking about what we already know.

We watched a programme called “My Story” that showed what it is like growing up inside a Scottish castle. We made our own castles pictures and the finished results are amazing!

Winter Wonderland in p1/2

Primary 1/2 had a frosty welcome as they arrived in class this week. Our class now has its own Winter Wonderland that even contains its own igloo. The children loved it and one boy in particular thought it was “just like Disneyland!” We are hoping this area will inspire some cross curricular work in literacy, science and art.
