Primary 1/2 have been working hard on our Big Maths work in class and completed our first “Beat That” this morning! We loved it! Being timed made it fun and helped us to work faster!

Searching for Nessie!
Artwork inspired by Kate McLelland
As part of our Scotland topic, we read the book “There was a Wee Lassie who swallowed a Midgie.”
We love the pictures and in February the illustrator, Kate McLelland is going to visit primary 1 and primary 1/2.
Today in primary 1/2, we looked closely at some of her artwork and were inspired to try some of our own.
Scottish Castles with p1/2
Through our rights respecting schools work we know that every child has the right to a nationality. With this in mind p1/2 have started their new topic all about Scotland to find out about ours. We started by talking about what we already knew about Scotland, what we want to learn about and how we think we are going to find this out.
We watched a programme called “My Story” that showed what it is like growing up inside a Scottish castle. We made our own castles pictures and the finished results are amazing!
Our children were so inspired they decided to make more Scottish castles during Golden Time!
Winter Wonderland in p1/2
Primary 1/2 had a frosty welcome as they arrived in class this week. Our class now has its own Winter Wonderland that even contains its own igloo. The children loved it and one boy in particular thought it was “just like Disneyland!” We are hoping this area will inspire some cross curricular work in literacy, science and art. Watch this space…..
New common word activities in primary 1/2
Primary 1/2 have been working very hard to read and spell our common words. This week we introduced two new common word tasks and we loved them!
Super Santas (Primary 1/2’s Christmas Company)
In primary 1/2 we have been very busy and created a business company called Super Santas. We have our own logo designed by our pupils and we have chosen fantastic products to make for our school’s Christmas Fayre which takes place tomorrow. Our company has allowed us to work cooperatively and has given us lots of opportunities to take part in decision making.
Golden Time in p1 and p1/2
Our younger classes thoroughly enjoyed some well deserved play during golden time this week and loved getting to visit each others classes.
Greenfaulds High School Christmas Market
This week Ravenswood Primary has been very like Santa’s workshop! Classes around the school have been creating companies and making products to sell at our Christmas Fayre. Mrs Simpson and some of our Enterprise Committee took some of our products to the Greenfaulds High School Christmas Market. We were a huge hit! This opportunity gave our pupils a chance to hone their sales techniques as well as allow us to meet some of the teachers at Greenfauld High School.
Wanted!
This week p1/2 revisited our Minibeast Hotel to see if any little creatures had decided to make it their home. We saw worms, woodlouse, beetles and a slug. We were hoping to find some hedgehogs, frogs or ladybirds so some problem solving children came up with the idea of making posters to persuade these minibeasts to come and live in our hotel. The next day we created “Wanted” posters using our most persuasive language. The results were fantastic and we will position them around our hotel to encourage the wildlife of Ravenswood to seek shelter in the cold winter months.
