War Time Cookies!

Primary six had great fun this afternoon learning all about rationing in WW2 and we even made some cookies from a rationing cookbook.

We were all a bit unsure when putting the carrot in the mixing bowl but were pleasantly surprised by the taste.

Making New Friends

The boys and girls from Overtown Primary and Castlehill Primary enjoyed spending more time getting to know each other on Friday. They watched the brilliant Egyptian assembly by P4/3 then participated in the Race to Rio Challenge.

Later the children played games with the pupils they will share a class with after the summer. It was clear that the children had great fun!

P4/3 Ancient Egyptian Assembly

Today, Primary Four/Three performed their Egyptian assembly three times! First to the infant classes in the school, second to the senior classes and pupils from Castlehill Primary and finally to friends and family.

I think it is clear from the smiling faces in the photographs that the children thoroughly enjoyed performing to an audience.

Amazing acting, beautiful singing and fabulous dancing. Well done Primary Four/Three – you should be extremely proud of your performances today!

Wonderful WW2 Workshop

Post written by P6

Today P6 were visited by Ian from the Mobile Military Museum. First we got to investigate lots of different artefacts used in WW1 and WW2. Whilst we explored we were also able to hold a shell from a mortar. It was heavy! After looking around we paired up and Ian gave us an A-Z quiz about WW1 and WW2. We were able to look around the displays to help find answers. The two winners were given a bullet!

Later Ian showed us some gas masks. He showed us some that were for babies, civilians and soldiers. We were also given the opportunity to try on newer gas masks. We were then able to hold real bayonets, guns and knives used during WW2.  We had a great day.

Jamie – I thought it was an amazing experience and I hope I can do it again.

Matthew – Today was probably the best day of the school year for me. I wish we could do it again.

Kyle Si – I really enjoyed seeing all of the great artefacts from WW2.

Heather – I really enjoyed looking at all of the old artefacts from WW2 and I hope we can do it again.

Karen – I really enjoyed holding the knives, guns and gas masks. It was a great experience and I learned lots.

P3/2 Visit to Summerlee

P3/2 visited Summerlee yesterday and had lots of fun!  They were learning all about life for children in Victorian Times.  They discovered that school teachers were very strict and that there could be up to 60 children in a class!!!  Children in Victorian times had to go to work to help earn money for their families, our boys and girls are glad they get to come to school instead.  The class saw many different Victorian artefacts like a bedwarmer, chimney sweep brushes, potato mashers and toys.  They had great fun dressing up in Victorian costumes, playing with the Victorian toys and practising writing with ink pots and pens.  All the boys and girls had a fantastic time at Summerlee and would love to go back again.

The Time to Vote for a New Name is Running Out!

Friday is the last day to return ballot papers for the new school name.  We have had a great response so far but there are still a few forms to be returned.  If you haven’t cast your vote then please complete the ballot paper and return it to the school tomorrow.

Votes will be counted by the Interim Parent Council on Monday and we will inform you of the new name as soon as possible.

Ballot for the Name of the New School

After consultation with parents, staff and pupils regarding possible new names for the new amalgamated school, the following three names have been selected to be on the ballot:

Clyde Valley Primary; Garrion Primary; Orchard Primary.

The reason for these choices are as follows:

Clyde Valley Primary School: Parents and children recognise that it is on the same campus as the secondary and there will be benefits from the primary and secondary schools having the same name. The new school is situated to enable sprawling views over the picturesque Clyde Valley which can be seen from the school.

Garrion Primary School:   In reference to the nearby historic Garrion Bridge (built in 1817) and the area around it. Also Clyde Valley High School is on the site of the old Garrion Academy, which was built in 1971. At the time, Garrion Academy had been purpose-built to provide a broad education for all young people, regardless of their background or ability, an inclusive ethos which the name suggestion would be remembered in the new school.

Orchard Primary School: In our area the orchards have a long history extending from the early monasteries to the industrial development of the Central Belt, when the area became one of the major fruit producers in Scotland. There are a number of orchards remain today on the Horsley Brae and surrounding areas, near to the new school. The positivity of the symbolism of an orchard/tree in growth, roots and life were all suggested.

All parents/carers, staff and pupils of both schools are entitled to vote on the new name.  The pupil ballot will be carried out within the school.

Votes will be counted by the members of the Interim Parent Council on Monday 1st February.  The result will be sent to North Lanarkshire Council for their approval.  Once approved the new name will be announced to parents.

The letter and ballot papers are being sent home with the children today.  It is extremely important that you vote and that ballot papers are sent back to the school in the return envelope no later than Friday 29th January.  Any ballot papers returned after this date will not be counted.
