The Green Group Listened To The Story ‘Owl Babies’

During our Three Read Approach, the Green Group listened to the story ‘Owl Babies.’  The children were all keen to listen and find out more information about the story after listening to the blurb.  Some children were able to discuss some book handling skills e.g. front and back cover and the spine.  The children were able to relate this story to their learning about keeping safe with ‘Sid and Shanarri’ as the setting in the story was in the woods similar to where Sid and Shanarri lived.  They were also able to link this by saying they could help the owl babies feel safe by finding their Mummy.  The children were all able to discuss how the owl babies felt and were able to talk about these feelings in more detail and work out a solution to make the baby owls feel safe.

Here are some of the discussions from the children.

“The Mummy wasn’t there, they were sad.  They thought she was eaten by a fox. Sarah said sit on my branch to feel safe.  Mummy came back and they felt happy.”

“They were waiting on their Mum.  She was away hunting and didn’t tell them. They had nobody to watch them, they didn’t feel safe.  She came back.  They felt happy when Mummy came back.  They wished and wished and wished for their Mummy.”

“Sarah, Percy and Bill were on a tree, their Mum wasn’t there.  They felt sad.  They woke up and Mummy wasn’t there.  She flew away to get food.  They sat on a branch and waited and waited and waited for their Mummy, they were sad.”
