A busy week in Primary 1!

This week we have been learning our first sound “a” … it is tricky but we’ve been practising it lots, painting it, making it with play dough, using iPads, drawing it in the sand and now we can even write it in our jotters!  We have also learnt our first word “the” it is a cheeky word as you have to stick your tongue out when you say it!

Here we are sorting and finding vowels. DSCN3981

In this game we are sorting the letters into ones with “holes” and ones without.

Magical things happening in Primary 1

On Thursday we received a very special letter from Pat the Friendly Dragon.  She was really upset because people have stopped reading Fairytales and Jack has lost his beanstalk.  She asked us to make leaves, branches and a stalk, sprinkle with magic fairy dust … and she would return with her friends in the middle of the night!

We were so delighted and surprised to find a lovely huge beanstalk in our classroom today.  She also sent us a special postbox so she can send us Fairytales to read and we can send her letters and drawings!

Taking care of our teeth

In Primary 1 we have been learning about why it is very important to visit the dentist and also brush our teeth regularly.

We conducted an experiment using hard boiled eggs to replicate the enamel on our teeth.  We put eggs into four different liquids that we enjoy drinking.  Water, milk, coke and sugar free diluting juice.  We made predictions as to which drink we thought would be the worst for our teeth and everyone thought it would be coke!  We left them soaking for a week and today we looked at the results.

Water and milk are both good for our teeth – the eggs were not damaged in anyway.  🙂

Coke is not good for our teeth – the egg shell was stained brown in colour. 🙁

The biggest surprise was the sugar free diluting juice, not only did it discolour the egg but it also damaged the shell.  🙁  🙁

WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?  It is okay to have “treats” and sweet drinks sometimes but if we do …  WE MUST BRUSH OUR TEETH PROPERLY!

The class then spent the morning writing instructions on how to brush your teeth properly and we also do this regularly in class.

Thank you Specsavers!

We are really enjoying our topic people who help us!  Thank you Mrs McCutcheon for the dressing up clothes!

Today we had some special visitors.  Janice and Laura came to our class today to tell us all about why it is important to get your eyes checked every two years.  Laura showed us all what happens when you visit the optician and how she checks to make sure our eyes are healthy.  We all tested our eyes on her chart, looked at special pictures which show if we are colour blind and also special 3d images.

She showed us what our eyes look like from her special machine and we can now name parts of our eye: the iris, pupil and optic nerve.

Janice who is the receptionist at Specsavers was very impressed with our telephone answering skills!

Hand washing experiment!

In Primary 1 we have been learning about why we may need to visit the doctor and how we can prevent this by not spreading germs.

In our first experiment we passed round a slice of bread with dirty hands!  Look at the photo – there were so many germs on our hands that the bread has gone mouldy!  We then washed our hands and passed around another slice of bread – the bread looks much better!

We know that germs are so small that they are invisible so for our second experiment we used glitter, to represent the germs and tested out the best way to wash our hands.  If we visit the toilet and just run our hands under the cold tap there is still lots of glitter on our hands.  If we do the same with warm water, more glitter is removed.  However, we learnt that we need warm water and soap to ensure that all the glitter (germs) are removed.

We thought it was important to share this learning with everyone in our school – so we have written instructions on how to wash your hands properly!

People Who Help Us!

Primary 1’s new topic this term is people who help us.  We have begun by learning about who you call in an emergency – 999 –  and who will respond.

In our classroom we now have Glenboig Medical Centre – where you can make an appointment to see the doctor, dentist or optician.  We also have our Emergency Service phone line operator desk and everyone  wants to visit the police tardis for some quiet reading time!

Easter Fun in Primary 1

Our class had a fantastic time performing at our Transport Assembly in mid March and it was wonderful to get the chance again to sing our “Welcome” Song at the joint campus Easter assembly.

We all had great fun wearing our Easter bonnets – a huge thank you to the dinner ladies who chose our winning hat!

We also ended the term making some Spring art to brighten up the area outside our classroom.

Primary 1 visit the Transport Museum

Primary 1 had a fantastic trip to the Riverside, Transport Museum today!  We had so much fun – we’ve not taken many photos (sorry!)  It was great to see all the different modes of transport that we have been learning about in class!

Finally a HUGE THANK YOU … to our wonderful parent and grandparent helpers today – you were superstars!!  🙂

Transport Challenge

Here is the challenge that the Primary 1’s were set – and look at the results – fantastic!!

TRANSPORT HOMEWORK BUILDING CHALLENGE

Get your creative thinking caps on for our Homework Challenge!  Our new topic is going to be “Transport” and to help enrich our learning I am looking for each child to make a small transport model. You can use any media you wish – yogurt pots, card-board boxes, kitchen rolls, lego, paint, glue, paper. (please just don’t buy anything!)

Sh! Quiet Critters about ….

Primary 1 have learnt their first phoneme – “sh!”

This is the “Quiet Critters” favourite phoneme as it makes everyone be quiet, listen and work hard!  Quiet Critters love to come out and watch children, they especially love when boys and girls are writing … but it must be quiet in the classroom or they are too frightened to venture out and observe the learning!

Look closely – you might spot one!

Learning through Play in Primary 1

Our new topic is Travel and Transport – we have six different purposeful play areas where the children can choose to learn:-

Cars – in this area the target is to think about directions – what words should we be using – left, right, turn, back, forward?

Trains – this task is all about teamwork – how big a train track can you build with your classmates?  Can you create tunnels and will the tracks go in different directions?

Reading Castle – a lovely quiet zone that you can look at books all about planes, trains, cars and boats

Travel Agency – We need two travel agents and two customers for this area?  What questions do we need to ask and then answer to book the perfect holiday?

Jigsaws – this area helps to refine fine motor skills and problem solving – there are lots of different “transport themed” jigsaws and Mrs Cairns makes you choose a more tricky one each time.

Writing table – we need lots of signs, words and pictures to help develop and consolidate our learning.  Be creative and help your classmates!
