Our Science Experiment

By Jordan F – We did an experiment this week in class. The experiment we did was to test and see if different meteorites changed the size of a crater formed in sand. My group were doing height we dropped the meteorite from. My group was Me, Scott M, Abigail, Grace S, and Alex. We all thought that it was pretty tricky but worked together to plan and do our experiment. We measured the crater when we dropped the meteorite from different heights. We found out that the higher we dropped it, the bigger the crater. I found it really hard to count it because of the sand. Science week has been !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone in P6 thinks that science week has been the best week so far. It was funny when Lewis had to hold all the food in his hands but there will be more on that coming up!

Our tennis skills

By Joshua and Jordan B

This week we learned new tennis skills. You must be in control of the ball, try to not hit the ball to high, if you hit it to hard it will be very sore so when you hit the ball you should be soft. It wont go far so hit it in the middle of the racquet it will give the player time to hit the ball back. If you don’t do that the other play will score a point.

The hand grip is really called forehand but we can call it the chop grip because it is like a axe and you are going to chop something. We also learned about backhand and practised by first rolling with a backhand, then hitting to a partner who caught it then we tried hitting a rally of backhands. Next week we are going to practise all this to help us get better. We need to practise our skills to improve.

What We Have Learned This Week

This week we have been learning lots of things. On Tuesday we went over to the High School for drama. Unluckily Miss Boyne our drama teacher wasn’t there so we came back to our school and did our shows there. The skill we used was expression. There was lots of different accents such as Irish and Jamaican. We also leaned how to stay in character. We have to think only on what we are acting.

On Wednesday we went to see author Chris Mitchell. When we were there we used our art skills to draw some of his characters from his series Realm Legends. First we learned how to draw Annie Revoltful and then we learned how to draw Zak. The best tip we picked up was to always draw the eyes first on a person or something that has eyes.

Yesterday a man called Mr Gollogly came in to see our iPads. There was lots of different stations. I was at the Sketch Nation station. We learned to use our art skills once again to draw our character and then used a steady hand to play our tilting game.

Finally we learned about perimeter. Perimeter is the edge of a 2d shapes. We measured a table with rubbers and we found the perimeter. That is just some of what we have learned this week.

Welcome back!

In the first week back we have started a brand new term. In maths we stared some tricky new sums which are multiplication and division. At first we all found it really hard but a week of practice really paid off… we are not as fast as lightning but were getting there. In Language we wrote a recount on our Easter holiday. By talking to people in our groups we already know our class has being getting up to a lot. As a health topic today we have been talking about substance misuse and our L.I. was to value our bodies in a positive way.

We cant wait for a term full of fun we will keep you updated. That’s all we have to today keep looking at our blog and soon you will find out more.

What a bunch of Clowns!

In P.E we have been using the circus equipment. We have had the ribbons out and been trying to make nice dances. We also used the diabolo and Lewis can do a trick with it! Spinning plates is really hard but fun to try. Some of us can throw them in the air and catch them. We got the hula hoops out and Aaron and Miss Rae had a competition….Aaron won (JUST – Miss Rae told us to write that!) Our favourite has been the funny little pedal things. We dont know what they are called by they require a lot of balance!! Have a look at the pictures of us clowning around!!

The Scottish Parliament

Blogging by Helen, Carly and Breige

On Tuesday, Primary 6 were lucky enough to go to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. When we arrived, we were so excited and we couldn’t wait to go inside. We got a warm welcome from Hayley, who was part of the education department. She took us to the education department and told us about the building. Then we learned about reserved and devolved matters. Reserved matters are dealt with at a UK Government level while devolved matters are dealt with by the Scottish Parliament. John Wilson came to answer our questions and he told us a little bit about his job.

Afterwards we went to the debating chamber and we saw Alex Salmond, the presiding officer and the president of Malawi. It was a privilege to see an African president. After that Hayley told us about the debating chamber it was amazing to go into the debating chamber.
Next we got a tour by Hayley and on the way we met Elaine Smith and Jim Logue and we got a fabulous picture with them. It was a very fun and interesting day. We all loved it!

Road Safety Show

On Wednesday 6th March a drama company came in to teach Primary 6 about road safety. First of all we were told that our participation was important, we were the directors of the show! The characters were introduced and the scene was set. The actors acted a part of the play then it was paused and we discussed various scenarios. We gave good points and bad points and made them realise how to change their behavior to keep them safe. They would then act the next part and we did the safe thing with all the scenes. It was really good fun and we learned lots about how to be safe on the road.

Here are what some of us have to say:

“ I really enjoyed it because the made learning about road safety fun! I also liked being an old granny that got run over.” Kacey

“ I really enjoyed the people that really put their all into it and I enjoyed to be a dog.” Louise’

“ I loved going to the road safety show. I got to be in it to tell Mike it’s a bad idea to play chicken on the road. At part of it a little boy called Danny was walking to school with his big brother and his friends he said “if Ziggie the road safety monster got ran over will his insides come out his bottom,” we where killing our self’s laughing” Leah.

Stage Assembly

Today we had the best stage assembly ever!!!

It was about Comic Relief and Mrs McIntyre showed us a video of a eight year old boy that lives in Kenya called Robert. Robert told us about how he lived and where he lived and what he had to put up with.

Roberts living conditions were awful and they didn’t have any warm or actually clean water. Robert lived in something called a slum which is a really small piece of shelter made of wood, iron planks and nails.

We also learned a really awesome song for red nose day.

To end with, we listened to the Comic Relief song called One Way or Another ( Teenage Kicks ) by 1-Direction.

Literacy Week

This week is has been literacy week so this week we have been doing lots of language which includes spelling, reading and writing.

On Monday in language we started Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.  We did prior knowledge which is what we know about the book and Metalinguistics which is tricky words.

On Tuesday we started our visualisation of the forest.   We read a passage from the book and we had to work in partners to write words about the forest and the words around it that helped you.  I worked with Lewis.

On Wednesday we had to write a persuasive speech about magic because this week is a magic theme. We had to persuade someone that magic is real because we saw Harry Potter’s wand, robe and a picture of him. I drew a border with Harry Potters scar and stars.

On Thursday we had to read another passage  from Harry Potter and write at least six main ideas.  After we had written our main ideas we wrote a summary.  We had to work in partners to do a peer read.  I worked with Louise.

On Friday the whole school dressed up in a magic theme.  There was lots of costumes like wizards, witches and magicians.

Photos of our week to follow!
