Well, what a fantastic week we have had in primary 6. Numeracy week has been awesome!
On Monday we started our volume and capacity work with Mrs McIntyre. We went outside and we learned the difference between volume and capacity – capacity is how much something can hold while volume is how much is in it. We worked out the capacity of various containers. It took us a while to work out how to do it, as our measuring cylinders were smaller than some of our containers. We had to remember how many full cylinders we used then add them and the extra part together.
On Tuesday we went outside again and did three different stations. With Miss Rae we were converting ml to litres and litres to ml. With Ms Ralph we did an orienteering task. We had to find the answer to a question then go and look for that answer in the playground. At each answer there was a letter and the letters spelt out measurement. The last station outside was with a parent helper and we had to estimate the capacity of containers then check our estimates. We all really enjoyed the outdoor learning at the start of the week!
On Wednesday we were looking at the volume in various food packets. We looked up the internet at supermarkets to see if the foods came in different volumes and we looked at the prices of each volume. We also talked about why it was important to use volume when taking medicines. If you take too much medicine you might have to go to hospital and you would be very ill. It is important to take the right volume.
On Thursday we used computers to start to research some famous mathematicians; some of them are Albert Einstein, Issac Newton, Andrew Wiles, Fibonacci and Pythagoras. We are making information posters or presentations and will complete these next week.
We also went into the hall for Mrs McIntyres stations. They were brilliant. We looked at volume, weight and length. There were lots of active stations to work round. We are going to finish these next week too as we got carried away and didn’t finish this week!! Thanks Mrs McIntryre, they were brilliant!
Over the week we have been doing a maths trail all around the school. This has helped show us how often we see and use numbers in our everyday surroundings. We saw car number plates, counted the spaces available for parking, how many can sit at the picnic tables, how far it is from the infant door to the senior door, the perimeter of the garden area in the senior playground and much more.
On Friday we were challenged to make a 1/2metre sqaure cube with newspapers. It was a challenge but great fun!!
This week has been amazing and made us realise how much we use maths and numeracy everyday!
