Welcome to 2015

Welcome back to everyone after the holidays.  We hope you had a good time and are ready for a new start in 2015.

We have been very busy this week in our first week back.  We have started our new novel called Georges Marvellous Medicine.  We have attended our first committee meeting and the children from the Media Busters have been particularly helpful in helping to fix our class smart board.  We had our first assembly of 2015 and we discussed Children’s Rights and Responsibilities.

We have many different things to be looking forward to and we are excited about the year ahead.

George’s Marvellous Medicine

The whole class have started reading George’s Marvellous Medicine.  Everyone is enjoying it so far and it has been good for P3 and P4 to work together for reading for a change.

We have so far looked at 3 different strategies to help us with our reading.  We looked at Prior Knowledge which involved thinking about what we already know about the book using the front cover and the back cover.  We then looked at tricky words in chapter 1 and used a dictionary to find out the meaning.  We also looked at visualisation to show different things we had found in the book that told us about Grandma.  We used Popplet on the iPads to make a mind map showing facts about grandma.  We divided the information into the categories of looks and personality.

On Friday we wrote about our own Grandmas.  Thankfully, nobody has a grandma like George!

We also have started to update our learning logs to show what we have been learning with this book.  We are looking forward to reading more.

Christmas Around the World

We found out facts about Christmas around the world.  The countries we looked at were Greece, Germany, France and Austrailia.

We found out that in France they eat chicken for dinner.

In Germany they put shoes out and if they are good it will be filled with sweets.  If not, they will get sticks.

In Greece it is not traditional to get presents on Christmas Day but they give presents on the first of January.

In Austrailia it is summer time and they often celebrate on the beach.

Merry Christmas to everyone around the world.

Primary 2/3 Party

Gregor – The ice-cream was the best.

Adrianna – I liked playing the party games.

Abby and Nieve were the winners of pass the parcel.

Hannah P – We had really good fun at our party.

Rishi – It was super fun.

We had party food in Miss McGregor’s classroom.

Leena – I loved the party.

Hannah M – The food was yummy scrummy.

Sarah – It was a wonderful party.

Nativity

Today, we were lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the nativity performance at their dress rehearsal.  Here are a few of our thoughts …..

Isla – I liked all the songs.

Angus – It was fantastic and my favourite character was the sleepy shepherd.

Bethany – I thought the show was “cracking”.  I really liked Mary.

Evan – I bet the P1-3s will do a great performance this week.

James – I enjoyed the part at the end where the compere introduced all the stars of the show.

Josh – My favourite character was the sleepy shepherd because he was funny,

Ava – I really enjoyed the nativity.

Brodie – I thought it was splendid.

Good luck for the rest of your performances.

Christmas Jumper Day

Today was Christmas Jumper Day.  We have been doing lots of fun activities.  We have had really good fun.  Everyone has paid £1 and all the money is going to the charity Save the Children.

Santa made an appearance in our classroom today.  Can you spot him in the photo?  He also brought his 2 elves to visit.

Hannah M thought we all looked “groovy” in our jumpers.

Someone is rocking around the Christmas tree.  Can you find him?

One of our classmates was very busy decorating their own jumper.  Can you spot the designer?

Santa also brought his reindeer.  How many can you see in the pictures?

We have some festive animals also.  How many different ones can you see?

Merry Christmas from everyone in P3/4!

Paper Chains

We have been making paper chains to decorate our classroom for Christmas.  We had a choice of different coloured paper between red, purple and blue.  We cut out strips and then joined them together in loops through each other.  We had to measure the strips so that they were 4cm in width.  Then we had to make sure they were joined together in a pattern.  We attached them to tables, doors and the chalkboard.

Literacy/Art Week

This week we have been focusing on Literacy and Art in class.  We were focusing on the artist Georgia O’Keeffe and one of her paintings based on a skyscraper.

We used paint and shapes to paint a skyscraper.  We used the shapes to print the windows and we mixed yellow and white paint to get different colours of light for the windows.

We also made fireworks pictures with pastels.

We wrote autobiographies to display with our paintings in the art show and we also wrote biographies about Georgia O’Keeffe.  We used the iPads to research about the life of Georgia O’Keeffe.

We also used the iPads to research about skyscrapers and find out how tall they are and when they were built.

We found doing the fireworks pictures fun and messy.  We also enjoyed doing the skyscraper paintings.
