The Rights of the Child

This week we have started our new topic on The Rights of the Child.  Some of them we discussed were:-

–  Adults should do what is best for you

–  You have the right to live

–  You have the right to make friends

–  You should not be put in prison

–  You have the right to play

–  You have the right to good health

–  No one should hurt you in any way

–  You have the right to education

We discussed these in our groups and decided on the 3 most important.  The ones in bold are the ones the class agreed on.

Which ones do you think are most important?

Symmetry

This week we have started to learn about symmetry.

Yesterday we learned that different objects, items and shapes can be symmetrical.  If something is symmetrical it means it is the same on each side when you cut or fold it through the middle.

image

We took photos, using the iPads, of different items around the class that showed symmetry.

image

Today, we used the pictures to find out how many lines of symmetry they had.  We separated them into ones with one line of symmetry, none and more than one.

image

We stuck them on and displayed them on a poster.

Fun in the Sun

image

This week we were able to have lots of fun in the sun.

Mrs Woodward rewarded the whole school with an extra 10 minutes of Golden Time as we were all behaving well at assembly.

We also decided to take advantage of the good weather and go outside for PE.

image

We Started with some running exercises to get warmed up.

image

Then we split into groups and set up 4 different stations with different materials.

The 4 stations were : –

–  running lengths of the playground

–  weaving through the cones

–  collecting a beanbag

–  going through hoops

We all had great fun and hope there will be more nice weather soon.

Fundraiser Event

Yesterday we all took part in the fundraiser event in the hall.

We split into 3 groups for the 3 Activities which were shuttle cocks, basketball and the bouncy castle.

We had a shot at each activity and had good fun!  Everyone enjoyed the bouncy castle.

We are looking forward to seeing the results of the sponsor event.

Fair trade Baking

Yesterday afternoon we all worked together to do some baking using fair-trade ingredients.  We had to gather our ingredients and our equipment before we could get started.  The ingredients we used were 125g butter, 200g digestive biscuits, 300g dark chocolate, 100g marshmallows and 3 tablespoons of golden syrup.

First, we had to wash our hands very carefully.

Secondly, we broke up the chocolate into smaller pieces and put it into a glass bowl.

Then, we had to put the bowl of chocolate onto the hob and stir it until it was melted.  WARNING!  Be careful as the bowl gets very hot.

After that, we sliced the butter and put it into the bowl to melt also.

image

Next, we added the 3 tablespoons of syrup and stirred until it had all melted and mixed together.

image

Following this, we poured half of the chocolate into another bowl.

Before we could add the digestive biscuits we broke them up into smaller pieces and we started to add it to the bowl of chocolate and mix it together.

image

Afterwards, we slowly added the marshmallows and continued to mix it together.  WARNING! Do not lick the spoon – it is very unhygienic.

image

Now, it was time to put the mixture onto the baking tray and smooth it out flat.

Finally, we added the extra chocolate to the top.

This morning, Mrs Allan had to slice the cake and put it on display for the bake sale.  We can’t wait until we go to buy it later and see how it tastes.

YUM! YUM!

Fraction Number Lines

Today, we made fraction number lines.  We used small pieces of card.  On one piece of card we wrote a fraction in fifths or tenths.  On another we wrote the fraction in words and on the final piece we drew a picture displaying this fraction.  Then we had to arrange them in the correct order.  Have a look at our pictures to see what we did.

The P4s were working on the fifths number lines and the P3s were working on the tenths number lines.

Making Instruments

This morning we have been starting to make instruments.  We have been using different materials such as bottles, tubs, boxes and other everyday items.  We will be putting the finishing touches to them this afternoon and then we will hopefully be able to play them.

image

We had to design our instruments and collect all our equipment.

image

image

When we had completed our instruments we noticed many different things :-

–  they made lots of different noises.

–  they looked different.

–  we used different materials to make them.

– the thickness of the elastic bands changed the pitch of the sound – if it was thicker it was a lower sound and if it was thinner it was a higher sound.

– the size of the holes in the plastic bottles also changed the pitch of the sound – the bigger holes made a lower sound and the smaller holes made a higher sound.

–  we had to do different things to play each instrument – hitting, shaking, strumming and blowing.

– how hard you play also affects the pitch of the sound.

The Solar Eclipse

This morning we went out to view the solar eclipse in the playground.  P4/5, P5, P6, P6/7 and P7 also came out to watch.

We made pinhole projectors so we could look at the eclipse safely and we turned our backs to the sun.

We couldn’t see the eclipse properly because the clouds were covering the sun.

It went quite dark and very cold and windy.

The last total eclipse happened in 1999 (about 16 years ago) and we hope it won’t be so long until the next one.

When we came in we watched it Live on BBC news.  We drew our own drawings and wrote down some facts about the solar eclipse.

Red Nose Day

image

We are all looking smart in Red.  Look out for updates on our red nose day later!!!

We really enjoyed P3s assembly and we also enjoyed joining in with the song,  We had some very funny faces.

image

We stuffed our faces with cake at the bake sale! YUMMY!

We designed our own red noses and Mrs Allan took pictures and displayed them in a pic collage.  Look at our lovely designs.

image

We have a good time today.  Some our favourite things were :-

Isla – I enjoyed designing my red nose.

Leena – I enjoyed the bake sale.

Ava – I enjoyed Red Nose Day.

Josh – I enjoyed dress down day.

Hannah P – I enjoyed designing a red nose.

Abby and Hannah M – We enjoyed everything.

James – I enjoyed P3 assembly.

Fractions

image

We have been learning about Fractions.  The P3s have been focusing on tenths and the P4s have been focusing on fifths.  We made a pic collage to show what we had learned so far.  We are still working on our pic collages and we will upload more when we have them.

The main facts we know so far are : –

–  all the sections have to be equal sizes so if there are 10 equal sections it is tenths and if there are 5 equal sections it is fifths.

–  half of a fifth is a tenth

–  and half of a half is a quarter

– when we write a fraction the top number is called a numerator and the bottom number is called a denominator

–  one tenth = 1/10

–  2/10 = 1/5

–  one fifth = 1/5

We used cubes to build towers and then we described them using fractions.

image

3/5 are black and 2/5 are white

image

2/10 are brown

2/10 are blue

1/10 is red

1/10 is orange

1/10 is yellow

1/10 is green

1/10 is black

1/10 is white
