Our Kelpie Visitors

This morning two Kelpies arrived in P1/2. These Kelpies are little models but they are exactly the same as the ones that we are going to visit on Thursday in Falkirk.image image image image image image image imageimage

The Kelpies is the last legend that we will be learning about for our Scotland Topic. In this story the water monsters come out and they look like beautiful, black horses but they are evil. We know that this is just a legend and that these monsters are not real!

Some other people in the school have been excited to see our Kelpie models. P1 came for a visit this afternoon and they really liked our models. Mrs Woodward, Mrs Hadden and Mrs Ross have also been in to see these amazing models. The Kelpies will be in our classroom until Thursday afternoon if anyone else would like to visit.

Erin – They felt soft.

Lewis – Inside the mouth of the model it was hard and rough.

Caiden – They are hard. I think they might be made out of metal bits.

Ayva – I think the models are nice.

Conor – The model is a little bit rough and bumpy.

Making Snowmen

Today was special because it had snowed last night.  This afternoon Mrs Noble set us the challenge of making the biggest snowballs that we could. We had to work out how to make a small snowball and roll it to make it bigger. They were really heavy.  We used our big snowballs to make snowmen.  It was good fun.  We are going to write about it tomorrow.

Rebecca – We had fun making snowballs.

Andrew – We all worked together to make our two snowmen.

Deonne – Mrs Noble helped us too.

Klea – I learned to roll a snowball to make it bigger.

Jason – I fell over a lot.

Wonderful Writing

image image image image image

We wrote about Nessie last week. We have been working on our narrative writing. Mrs Noble thought that our writing was brilliant and she told Mrs Woodward. She came to read our stories and she said that she was very proud of all of us.

This week for writing we have new writing targets. Primary 1 are all going to write more than 1 sentence. Primary 2 are going to try to use joining words like and, but, so and because and they are also going to spell common words correctly. We are all working hard to use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

We were learning about Bruce and the Spider for our topic this week so we decided to write our own stories retelling this Scottish legend.

William – I was trying hard to write using finger spaces.

Niamh – I was trying to write a wee bit neater and spell my common words properly.

Jason – I was trying to be a bit neater and I was checking my sentences made sense.

Erin – I was writing my sentences without help.

Caiden – I was thinking carefully about my capital letters.

The Start of 2015!

We are back at school after the holidays and we are feeling fantastic after a nice break.  We have been sharing our news about our Christmas holidays and it sounds like we all had a lovely time.  Now that we are back at school we are redy to learn some new things.

In maths we have started learning about addition.  This is brand new for primary 1 but primary 2 are learning to do more difficult problems  with a 100 square.  We are still working hard with our big maths and we have new learn its to remember.

We are working hard with our reading too.  We have noticed that our books are getting harder and we know that practise makes perfect.

Our new topic is about the Scottish myths and legends.  We found out that a legend is a kind of story that has been passed along from a long long time ago.  We have decided to learn about the Selkies, The Loch Ness Monster, The Kelpies and a story about a famous King and a Spider.  As well as learning about Scotish legends we are also having a go at some events from the Highland Games during P.E.

The Scottish Book Awards – The Result!

On Friday we voted for which book we liked the most.  Primary 1/2 and Primary 1 came to our classroom.  We put 1 cross next to our favourite book.  Mrs MacDonald read out our choices and Mrs Noble wrote tally marks.  We learned that when you get to 5 tally marks you draw a gate.  Primary 2 practised counting in 5s to help us to work out our winner.  Robot Rumpus was the winner with 21 votes. Lost for Words got 9 votes and Princess Penelope got 6.

Caiden – I liked doing Scottish Book Awards work because it was fun.

Ryan – I liked that our winner was Robot Rumpus because this is the book I voted for.

Scottish Book Awards- Our Final Week!

For our last Scottish Book Award Book we read Princess Penelope and the Runaway Kitten.  The book was about a kitten who ran away.  There was pink wool tangled around the kitten’s tummy and it ended up all through the palace.

Andrew – I liked the part of the story when the kitten wrapped the wool around the guard.

Erin – I liked the bit when the kitten was running about the plants.

Rhys – We made a book with pictures and sentences.

Scottish Book Awards Week 2!

This week we have been looking at a book called Robot Rumpus and we think it is super funny. One of our tasks was to design our own robot to help around the house.  This book was a rhyming book and we became word detectives to find set of rhyming words. Some of us created robots for our homework task using 3D shapes from home and shared these with the class.

Ewan – I like the story because it is funny when the Mum and Dad screamed.

Dionne – It was tricky to write a book review about our favourite part because so many bits of the book are funny.

Niamh – I think Robot Rumpus is great fun.

Our Class Post Office

On Tuesday we worked as a whole class to create our very own post office in our classroom.  P1/2 are going to to be Chryston Primary’s Christmas Posties. We will be sorting and delivering all of the Christmas Cards to the classes this year. We made signs for our post office.  We decorated our Christmas post box. We sorted out a special basket for each class. We wrapped lots of parcels.  We noticed that all of the parcels were different kinds of 3D shapes.

Caiden – I liked decorating the post post.

Lewis – I think all the children worked hard to make our post office.

Conor – I liked wrapping the presents and choosing a bow for mine.

Niamh – I liked puting the wrapping paper on the parcel. It was easy because Jason helped me.

Literacy Across Learning Week in P1/2

This week is our literacy across learning week.  P1/2 are focusing on their literacy and using it to help them to find out all about an artist.  Yesterday we started to learn about Angela Davidson.  We found out that her pictures always have animals in them.  She taught herself to paint.  We think that her pictures look like real animals.  She is a Scottish artist and she lives in Aberdeen.  The first picture that she sold was a picture of cows’ noses. She lives with her husband and her son Lawrie.  When Lawrie was little, Great Ormond Street Hospital saved his life.  Angela Davidson gave £9000 to the hospital from selling a painting of Lawrie riding a horse.

Dionne – I am looking forward to painting animals

Lewis – I am looking forward to painting wild animals the same as Angela Davidson.

Ryan – I am looking forward to trying to colour the animals using paint.

Eva – I am looking forward to seeing more of this artist’s pictures.

We are all looking forward to seeing what the other classes are getting up to this week.  We will update our blog later in the week to let you know what we have been learning.
