Scottish Book Awards- Our Final Week!

For our last Scottish Book Award Book we read Princess Penelope and the Runaway Kitten.  The book was about a kitten who ran away.  There was pink wool tangled around the kitten’s tummy and it ended up all through the palace.

Andrew – I liked the part of the story when the kitten wrapped the wool around the guard.

Erin – I liked the bit when the kitten was running about the plants.

Rhys – We made a book with pictures and sentences.

Symmetry

This week we have started to learn about symmetry.  We found out that butterflies are symmetrical and so are our faces.  For something to be symmetrical there needs to be the same on both sides.  Ewan explained that if you draw a line down a face there would be half a mouth, half a nose and one eye on both sides.

Today we worked in pairs.  We designed one half of a butterfly and then our partner had to try to complete the other side to make the butterfly symmetrical.

Caiden – I know that a circle is symmetrical.

Ryan – I know that a snowball is symmetrical.

Benjamin – Doing the symmetrical pictures was fun.

Rhys – The butterfly activity was fun because I got to work with Caiden.

We are looking forward to making some symmetrical Christmas decorations for our classroom.

Scottish Book Awards Week 2!

This week we have been looking at a book called Robot Rumpus and we think it is super funny. One of our tasks was to design our own robot to help around the house.  This book was a rhyming book and we became word detectives to find set of rhyming words. Some of us created robots for our homework task using 3D shapes from home and shared these with the class.

Ewan – I like the story because it is funny when the Mum and Dad screamed.

Dionne – It was tricky to write a book review about our favourite part because so many bits of the book are funny.

Niamh – I think Robot Rumpus is great fun.

Our Class Post Office

On Tuesday we worked as a whole class to create our very own post office in our classroom.  P1/2 are going to to be Chryston Primary’s Christmas Posties. We will be sorting and delivering all of the Christmas Cards to the classes this year. We made signs for our post office.  We decorated our Christmas post box. We sorted out a special basket for each class. We wrapped lots of parcels.  We noticed that all of the parcels were different kinds of 3D shapes.

Caiden – I liked decorating the post post.

Lewis – I think all the children worked hard to make our post office.

Conor – I liked wrapping the presents and choosing a bow for mine.

Niamh – I liked puting the wrapping paper on the parcel. It was easy because Jason helped me.

The Scottish Book Awards Are Coming!

This week it is Scottish Book Week.  To celebrate we are going to spend 3 weeks working on each of the books that have been short listed for the Scottish Book Awards.  This week we are working a boom called ‘Lost for Words’ by Natalie Russell. We found out that Natalie Russell wrote the book and drew the pictures we think she is very clever.

The first thing we did was read the book.  Yesterday we did a jumbled sentence task and we thought about what the book was about.

Today we did a little bit of writing.  We found out lots of facts about Tapirs. We did this research because the book has a character called Tapir who is a Tapir.

William -I learned that Tapirs eat small branches.

Dionne- I learned that they are good at diving and swimming.

Conor- I learned that Tapirs are brown.

Erin- I learned that Tapirs live in the rainforest.

We are looking forward to doing some artwork just like Tapir in our book.

Children in Need in P1/2

Today is children in need. We raised money by coming to school wearing our own clothes. We all donated £1 this morning.

Pudsey bear helped P1/2 with their maths today. Primary 1 were learning some adding using 2 Pudsey bears. We added counters to make the spots on Pudsey’s eye match. Then we added them together.

primary 2 used Pudsey to practise their doubles. We worked in pairs and we rolled the dice to tell us what number to double. We put spots on Pudsey’s eye patch to practise our doubles facts.

This afternoon we learned about how Pudsey helps children. We made our own story books about to take home.

Primary 2’s Place Value

This week we have been learning about tens and units. We have practised counting in multiples of 10. We learned a new game to help us practise tens and units. We needed to use playing cards with a partner to make the biggest number that we could.

Niamh – Our new game helped me with my maths.

Rhys – It helped me with my tens and units.

Adam – I really liked the game because I could pick different cards and it helped me.

Jason – I liked this game because I kept winning. I won every match.

Primary 1’s Super Counting Games

This week we learned two new number games.  The first game helped us to practise our counting up to 10. It was called bead counting. We had to work in a group to choose. A little card with a number on it. We had to read the number and then we had to count the right number of beads. The second game we learned helped us think about our numbers too.  We had to pick out a number and find other parts of the jigsaw that matched that number.

Benjamin – I enjoyed it.

Eva – I liked the bead counting.

William – I thought the games were good.

Erin – my favourite game was the beads.

Ayva- I liked playing with the beads.

Klea – I liked the jigsaws the best.
