A group of 40 S2 Science pupils visited the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh for the Careers Hive 2020 event.

The day began with a tour of the fantastic exhibits before the pupils were given the chance to question some industry professionals on their STEM careers and ask for advice on their future. A workshop followed which allowed the pupils to link the skills developed in Science to possible careers before they were let loose on the interactive exhibition.

Pupils had the chance to get hands on with robotics, engines and keyhole surgery as well as experience some amazing new technology. Speed dating with a number of STEM employees allowed the pupils to gather important information and advice into possible career paths.

Chemistry at Work at University of Strathclyde

Calderhead High School pupils and Mrs Crosbie recently participated in the ‘Chemistry at Work’ event at the University of Strathclyde. This is an annual event sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry which allows school pupils an opportunity to appreciate the place of chemistry in everyday life and the world of work. Pupils participated in presentations and workshops and got the chance to work in the university labs on projects such as colour changing ink. The pupils really enjoyed learning about Chemistry at Work!
We were also delighted to see that our former pupil and recent guest speaker, Dr Michell Carlin, was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

CERN Trip 2018

“We had a glimpse of what happens in the heart of a star”

Twenty S4-S6 Chemistry and Physics  pupils recently made the trip to Geneva for a tour of European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). After a quick train and tram journey from the airport, the pupils dropped their luggage at the hostel before enjoying ice cream in the glorious sunshine beside Lake Geneva.

The group took advantage of the weather by exploring the sights around the city and took a water taxi across the lake to see the Jet d’Eau.

There was an early start on Tuesday as the pupils made their way to CERN for a lecture by Mike Tyrell who discussed results from the various detectors at Large Hadron Collider and the benefits that the program has brought to society.

They then made the short trip over the border to France where they were given a tour of the testing facility and central control centre. Everyone enjoyed a well earned lunch with the scientists at the the CERN restaurant before taking in the Microcosm and Globe of Innovation and Science exhibitions. There was just enough time to take in the Natural History museum the following day before making their way back to the airport to catch the flight home.

Robotics Success

Calderhead High School’s Robotics clubs have gone from strength to strength.

VEX Robots
Vex

Our senior team recently participated in the VEX Robotics “In the Zone” competition at New College, Lanarkshire. Ceinwyn and Jason in S6 built an excellent robot which was required to carry out tasks such as stacking cones, scoring goals, and parking. They were narrowly defeated in the final and won second place. Well done!

Our junior robot creators took part in the recent Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge at Forth Valley College, which was one of twenty five regional heats. One hundred and forty young people aged between eleven and fourteen, organised into teams from local high schools, took part in the Challenge. Each team had learned how to build, program and control autonomous LEGO robots to complete a series of aviation themed missions. Our pupils built their robots during lunchtime Lego Robot club sessions and worked out how to complete the missions. On the day of the competition, they also had to research, design and present their own solution to a contemporary engineering problem faced by STEM professionals in the aviation industry. Everyone had a great time and well done to all who took part.

The Royal Society

We are proud to say that Calderhead High School is a member of the Royal Society’s Associate Schools and Colleges Network. The Royal Society is a Fellowship of many of the world’s most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, engineering, and medicine. The Society aims to recognise and support excellence in science.

Pupils in our book group recently participated in a judging panel for the Royal Society’s Young People’s Book Prize. We were given a shortlist of six books to read and evaluate and the pupils greatly enjoyed considering the books and awarding points based on a number of different criteria, such as ease of reading, layout, interest, and the appeal of the book. Most points were awarded to “Robert Winston’s Home Lab” which proved extremely popular with the pupils, and the science department, who tried some of the experiments detailed in the book. Physics teacher, Mr Jack, attended the award ceremony for the Book Prize at the Glasgow Science Centre on Monday, 20 November 2017 and the subsequent reception and planetarium show.

Pupils Get Energised

S2 pupils participated in a “Get Energised” Investigation Day at the National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride recently and learned about renewable energy by participating in workshops where they had the opportunity to build their own hydro turbine, and engineer a wave technology model.

S4 Physics pupils also enjoyed a Challenge day at the Museum, where they got the chance to learn more about solar, wind, hydro and wave power by conducting experiments and meeting challenges. They also met high-profile industry experts.

“Get Energised” is a programme encouraging school pupils to explore, discover and understand renewable energy and is facilitated by the National Museum of Scotland with funding from the ScottishPower Foundation.

Careering Into Science

bodyworksThe Glasgow Science Centre visited the school last week to give a presentation and workshop to our S1 pupils.  The presentation was called “Careering into Science” and talked about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers and how choosing to study Science can lead into these.  The workshop was called “Bodyworks” and gave pupils a chance to get hands on in learning about how your body works really hard every second of every day to keep you alive and how to help your body by keeping fit and healthy.

Plastic Fantastic Lecture

What’s the link between Lego blocks, zero pollution cars, disposable nappies, liquids that flow up hill, and false legs? How is this linked to the perfect recipe for slime?  Mrs Crosbie’s Chemistry class attended a “Fantastic Plastic” demonstration lecture delivered by Professor Averil McDonald at the University of Glasgow on 1st September.  The lecture discussed the physical properties of plastics as featured in the topic in National 4/5 ‘Properties of Plastics’ and featured many interesting demonstrations.

After a brief overview of the great variety of physical properties of plastics that make them suitable for various intriguing and surprising applications, students were reminded of the basic concepts of solid, liquids and gases and introduced to the idea of polymers consisting of long chain molecules. Polymers can exist as solid and liquids but often have properties of both (as in slime). Lively demonstrations showed the effects of increasing the temperature, crosslinking the molecules, “tangling up” the polymer chains, and dissolving them in liquids. Some examples are given to show how by controlling what happens at the molecular level, the characteristics of the final material are determined.

Tomorrow’s Engineers – Robotics

Robotics Challenge 2017
Robotics Challenge 2017

Calderhead High School’s Robotics club (Dylan, Dale , Josh, Ethan, and Jamie) attended the Tomorrow’s Engineers regional heat at West Lothian College on Monday, 20th February.

They competed in a teamwork bridge building challenge where they designed and built a bridge from scrap wood to successfully carry a car.

Members of the team were interrogated on their Lego Mindstorms robot design which they then programmed to carry out a number of space mission challenges.

The team were delighted to return with a trophy for their presentation on how robots can be used to help humans explore space. Well done!
