Harry Potter Night

Calderhead Library was transformed into Hogwarts’ Calderhead Campus  at lunchtime on 2nd February, in celebration of Harry Potter Book Night.

All those wizards and witches who received their Hogwarts Letters were first sorted into their respective Houses and then treated to an excellent Potions class with Professor Crosbie, who took sinister delight in helping pupils create Goblin Slobber, Laughter Potion and Dragon Flare.

Thank you to Mrs Crosbie and the Science Department for creating the potions class and to Mrs Phee who helped sort all our young wizards and witches.

The Royal Society

We are proud to say that Calderhead High School is a member of the Royal Society’s Associate Schools and Colleges Network. The Royal Society is a Fellowship of many of the world’s most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, engineering, and medicine. The Society aims to recognise and support excellence in science.

Pupils in our book group recently participated in a judging panel for the Royal Society’s Young People’s Book Prize. We were given a shortlist of six books to read and evaluate and the pupils greatly enjoyed considering the books and awarding points based on a number of different criteria, such as ease of reading, layout, interest, and the appeal of the book. Most points were awarded to “Robert Winston’s Home Lab” which proved extremely popular with the pupils, and the science department, who tried some of the experiments detailed in the book. Physics teacher, Mr Jack, attended the award ceremony for the Book Prize at the Glasgow Science Centre on Monday, 20 November 2017 and the subsequent reception and planetarium show.

Harry Potter Night

We had a great time celebrating Harry Potter Book Night in the library at lunchtime on Thursday, 2nd February.

Pupils were sorted into their houses, Gryffndor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin, before taking part in a Harry Potter quiz which showed their extensive knowledge of all things Potter.

The celebration ended with some spirited wizard duelling, judged by our very own “Professor” Galloway. Special thanks also to “Professor” Biggerstaff who presided over the sorting ceremony.

Chinese New Year

Happy Chinese New Year 2017 – The Year of the Rooster. The Chinese New Year celebrations started on 28th January and will continue until 15 February.  The new year, also known as the Spring Festival, is marked by the lunisolar Chinese calendar, so the date changes from year to year.

Chinese new yearCalderhead Book Group and French Club came together at lunchtime on Friday to celebrate the new year.  Catherine Lumsden, one of this year’s Tianjin Scholars, spoke to the pupils about her experiences in Tianjin and taught them some Mandarin. The pupils also got an opportunity to try using chopsticks and discovered that it is not as easy as it looks! Thanks to Catherine for coming in to speak to us.
