A group of 40 S2 Science pupils visited the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh for the Careers Hive 2020 event.

The day began with a tour of the fantastic exhibits before the pupils were given the chance to question some industry professionals on their STEM careers and ask for advice on their future. A workshop followed which allowed the pupils to link the skills developed in Science to possible careers before they were let loose on the interactive exhibition.

Pupils had the chance to get hands on with robotics, engines and keyhole surgery as well as experience some amazing new technology. Speed dating with a number of STEM employees allowed the pupils to gather important information and advice into possible career paths.

English Department Trip to Krakow

Arriving at school at 1.00am for an early flight to Krakow, Poland had me initially fearful – what if they bus didn’t show? What if it broke down on the way to the airport? What if the pupils were late and school was closed? But all of our worries came to nothing as when we pulled up our bus was already waiting for us along with every pupil eager to board and embark on their adventure. Although an early start we arrived, dropped our luggage and headed straight to a tour of the Jewish Quarter. Equity had organised a walking tour of the Jewish Ghetto/Kazimierz district with Entrance to the Remuh Cemetery and Synagogue. We learned a lot and it was a great experience as it meant we were not waiting around to check-in to our hotel. After our tour we stopped for lunch in the Jewish District (which was where our hotel was conveniently located) before heading back to the hotel to unpack and settle in. We chose to organise our own meals in Poland and Equity were happy for us to do so which was a great bonus.  We had dinner in a Mexican restaurant, Manzana, before lights out.

Day Two

We woke to a beautiful buffet breakfast in our hotel with a wide array of options. We were then collected by a tour guide and our driver who drove us to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. As we approached the town of Oswiecim a feeling of quiet came upon us.  We were nervous and apprehensive about both our own reactions to the experience of Auschwitz but that of our pupils. When we arrived we were met by a tour guide who sensitively and informatively provided a private tour of the camp.  We left feeling sombre yet grateful that we could experience such a trip and experience as it means that the memory of all those who perished can live on to ensure it never happens again.

That evening we went to the Christmas Markets in Krakow Old Square where we ate pierogis, bratwursts and sweet treats while we reflected on the day that we had had.

English Trip to Poland 2019

Day Three

We woke early, to another great breakfast, before our collection by our guide and tour bus who took us to the town of Wieliczka to visit the world UNESCO Salt Mines. We were met by our guide (who the pupils were convinced was a vampire who lived in the mines) who was funny, charismatic and knowledgeable. He escorted us deep into the mines and we were able to see the beautiful structures and architecture surrounding us all made of salt. He informed us that we could lick the walls and the floors if we wanted but he was yet to have a group who had done so – of course our pupils then proceeded to lick the floor much to his delight. When we asked the pupils to reflect on their trip many picked the mines as their favourite excursion. English Trip to Poland 2019

Day Four

We were collected and went on a short walking tour of what was previously the Jewish Ghetto. We had been walking the streets for days and didn’t realise how steeped in history our entire surrounding area was.  We then went on a tour of Schindler’s Factory which was interactive and enjoyed very much so by the pupils. We then went to the Galicia Museum not far from Schindler’s Factory. In the afternoon we had free time, a chance to visit the Kazimierz Mall and spend the rest of the money that was burning holes in many of their pockets by this point. For our last meal together in Poland we went to The Hard Rock Café before finishing off with a final trip to the Christmas Markets.

Day Five

The school holidays had official started back home and it was time for us to head to the airport.  We were picked up promptly by our driver Tomas who had been with us for five days.

We left Krakow with memories that will last a lifetime. We experienced a wealth of activities that allowed us to experience History and Literature first-hand.  But a school trip is not just about the educational aspects, it is the memories that only you as a group understand. For us it was walking into posts, playing pretend skipping ropes with the locals, trying new foods (Mexican!) and listening to the story of the black lady. School trips are an immersive experience that are not just about the planned excursions, it is also about all of the moments in-between.

On our final bus journey home the pupils were already asking where are we going next?

Trip to Disneyland

EuroDisney 19The annual Maths trip to Disneyland Paris took place earlier this month. Forty pupils greatly enjoyed their visit to Euro Disney – they were given the opportunity to design their own rollercoaster and were very impressed with the results.  They also had a fantastic time visiting the parks and the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show.  Special thanks to the four members of staff who freely gave up their time to provide such an unforgettable experience for the pupils: Mrs Buchanan, Mrs Byrne, Mrs Johnstone, and Mr Leitch.

Lessons from Auschwitz

On 7th November, S6 pupils Jamie Reid and Brianna Shaw travelled with pupils from all over Scotland to visit Auschwitz in Poland. This is part of their work with the Holocaust Memorial Trust and the Lessons from Auschwitz Project. The pupils were offered a unique opportunity to be involved in a four-part course offered by the Holocaust Educational Trust, which consists of two seminars, a one day visit to Poland and a Next Steps project through which students pass on the lessons they have learned to the wider learning community. The Project is a journey of learning and exploration about the history of the Holocaust and about the world we live in. Brianna and Jamie described the whole project as a moving and thought-provoking experience. We are looking forward to hearing Brianna and Jamie share their experience with our learning community at Calderhead High School.

Outward Bound Course 2019

Outward Bound 2019

Staff and senior pupils recently attended an Outward Bound Leadership course at Loch Eil Centre in the Scottish Highlands. Staff and pupils enjoyed many different experiences including a jog and a dip in the loch, abseiling and hill walking. They even got to try some foraging and sampled some freshly picked wood sorrel!

Outward Bound Trust is a learning charity which equips young people with social and emotional skills through learning and adventure outdoors.  The Centre is situated on the shores of the loch, near Fort William, and is the Trust’s most remote outdoor education centre.  Our staff and pupils had a wonderful time and learned much from the experience.

Chemistry at Work at University of Strathclyde

Calderhead High School pupils and Mrs Crosbie recently participated in the ‘Chemistry at Work’ event at the University of Strathclyde. This is an annual event sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry which allows school pupils an opportunity to appreciate the place of chemistry in everyday life and the world of work. Pupils participated in presentations and workshops and got the chance to work in the university labs on projects such as colour changing ink. The pupils really enjoyed learning about Chemistry at Work!
We were also delighted to see that our former pupil and recent guest speaker, Dr Michell Carlin, was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

BBC Scotland Young Reporter’s Day

BBC Young Reporters Day
BBC Young Reporters Day

For News Day (6th March) the Young Reporter team and BBC Scotland invited pupils from a handful of schools across Scotland to visit their iconic headquarters at Pacific Quay in Glasgow and pupils from Calderhead High School were delighted to accept the invitation.

The pupils were taught some of the skills of being a reporter and got the opportunity to put these into practice. They learned the background mechanics – Emma demonstrated that she was a natural using the autocue! The pupils got a chance to interview each other in the radio recording rooms before filming an interview with Fraser Gillan, star of the new BBC Scotland flagship programme, ‘The Nine’.

They also met the team behind ‘The Social’ and were intrigued to see the ‘post-it’ notice board with ideas for current and future features.

After lunch, the pupils were delighted to film an interview with BBC Weatherman, Christopher Blanchett, and you can see Sahand and Shakira’s interview by clicking here.

The pupils then learned more about evaluating sources and discovering ‘fake news’.

The pupils had a fantastic day and learned much about being young reporters. They are looking forward to implementing all this at Calderhead’s Young Reporters’ Club.

Half a Sixpence

Pupils and staff from Calderhead High School recently visited Motherwell Concert Hall to see the Shine Youth Music Theatre production of the musical comedy Half a Sixpence. Everyone agreed that it was an excellent show. Thank you to Mrs Prucnal in the Music Department for organising the trip.

CERN Trip 2018

“We had a glimpse of what happens in the heart of a star”

Twenty S4-S6 Chemistry and Physics  pupils recently made the trip to Geneva for a tour of European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). After a quick train and tram journey from the airport, the pupils dropped their luggage at the hostel before enjoying ice cream in the glorious sunshine beside Lake Geneva.

The group took advantage of the weather by exploring the sights around the city and took a water taxi across the lake to see the Jet d’Eau.

There was an early start on Tuesday as the pupils made their way to CERN for a lecture by Mike Tyrell who discussed results from the various detectors at Large Hadron Collider and the benefits that the program has brought to society.

They then made the short trip over the border to France where they were given a tour of the testing facility and central control centre. Everyone enjoyed a well earned lunch with the scientists at the the CERN restaurant before taking in the Microcosm and Globe of Innovation and Science exhibitions. There was just enough time to take in the Natural History museum the following day before making their way back to the airport to catch the flight home.
