Return to School January 2021

Update January 5th 2021
I hope this finds you well and I hope you have had a chance to spend some time during the break with those dear to you.
In light of the statement yesterday by the First Minister of the planning arrangements for the new term in January, I am providing this update to confirm a number of actions that have been planned or completed in advance of the new term.
Arrangements for the Start of the New Term
Calderhead High School will open only for childcare for key worker children (and children identified as vulnerable) between Wednesday, 6 January and Friday, 8 January. The statement from the FM also makes it clear that from 11 January – 1 February there will be a universal provision of online learning for all students, with the exception of those previously highlighted Key Worker children and those in the vulnerable group, who will be supported in person within our establishments. These arrangements are based on Scottish Government decisions, which are our responsibility to implement.  The only change in this from previous announcements is the extension of the period of on-line / remote learning till 1 February. Therefore, our plans remain as they were prior to the break, with the days of 6 – 8 January key to our planning and next stage refinement.Identifying Key Worker children
In the days 6 – 8 January, those attending school are doing so for childcare purposes.
It is possible that not all key workers will have completed the online form, with further impacts also possible by the general stay at home order announced yesterday.   It is important that any key worker wishing to access in-school childcare does complete the online form, which is referred to in the accompanying parent letter.  Head Teachers are asked to ensure that they do so.  Key worker children can be admitted to schools while this process is being completed – people should not be turned away pending the process.

Planning for the Week of the 11th and Beyond
We know this will be a developing position in January and that there is the possibility of further shifts in arrangements at each Scottish Government review point.  We need to use the first three days of term to continue to effectively plan for the delivery model for the week of the 11th and I am sure that we will learn more about how our planning needs to evolve and what next stage actions best meet expectations whilst mitigating risk.

Plan Effective Delivery
We will take the next few days to create  plans to cater for the children of key workers and vulnerable children, as well as plans to provide online learning for all pupils.

Logistics
At this stage transportation will proceed for the first few days as normal and be reviewed thereafter.  We will keep you updated about this issue.
Even if no pupils attend, Calderhead High School will remain open at this stage.

Over the next few weeks, we will be reassessing the needs of our pupils. If your child is having difficulty accessing work online then please contact the school, preferably their Principal Teacher of Pupil Support Teacher in the first instance.

Please accept my very best wishes for the New Year for you and your family.

Information for Parents and Carers

Dear Parent / Carer,

I hope this letter finds you safe and well. I would like to set out some new arrangements that we have put in place to help keep pupils and staff safe. These are all in line with Scottish Government and North Lanarkshire Council guidance. As this guidance changes we will keep you updated.

Transport

Pupils travelling by transport provided by NLC do not have to wear face coverings but can if they wish. We ask that pupils sit it in the same seats for each journey.

Pupils

At the start of interval, start of lunch and at the end of the school day pupils are asked to leave the building by the doors at the bottom of the stairs, this is to minimise/avoid large gatherings. There are hand sanitiser stations at the main entrances to the school and throughout the building, please make use of these to prevent the spread of any diseases.  In addition at the end of each block of learning pupils will be asked to wipe their desk to help prevent the spread of any disease.

Parents and carers

If parents or carers need to speak to someone the first port of call should be via telephone to their Principal Teacher of Pupil Support

Mrs Angela Buchanan (Burns)

Ms Louise Carson (Lochhead, acting)

Mrs Gillian Horn (Fleming)

Mrs Phee (Lochhead)

Mrs Ros Ward (Wallace, Mon, Tues, Wed AM)

Mr Leitch (Wallace, Wed PM, Thur, Fri)

Face to face meetings will only take place in exceptional circumstances and will be pre-arranged.

When dropping off your child at please remain in the car.

Uniform

As we are not permitted under the guidance to use our changing rooms pupils should come to school dressed for outdoor PE and remain in their kit for the rest of the day. We recommend that pupils bring a change of footwear. On all the other days pupils should come dressed in full school uniform.

2 Week Timetable Rotation for S1 /S2 / S3 /S4

To enhance the safety of all in the school community in relation to Covid 19 NLC has introduced a 2 week timetable rotation for S1-S4. The reasons for this are:

  • To reduce pupil / staff movement during the school day
  • To reduce the number of physical interactions between different staff and pupils
  • A reduction in the number of times that pupils ‘cross over’ between classes from 18 to 3
  • There will be no loss to any pupils in allocated teaching time for each subject

Please be assured that all pupils will receive 100% of time in their subjects over the course of the 2 weeks

How will this work?

Introduction of a new rotation to the existing school timetable

This will begin from Monday 17th August 2020

Timetables will remain similar, but, follow a 2 week rotation

Week 1 RED, Week 2 BLUE

Mapping the original timetable with weeks 1 & 2 as shown below, please note Mon 5, Tue 5 and Thu 5 map onto both weeks.

Award Ceremony, 22 June 2016

We celebrated the success of our pupils on Wednesday,  22 June 2016, recognising their excellent academic progress and wider achievements. As well as all the well-deserved awards given to our pupils, the Provost Award was given to the whole community of Shotts for their support over the last few weeks.

Our guest speaker was Mr Alex Napier, and we enjoyed entertainment from many of our talented pupils.

Here’s just a few of the activities and achievements of our pupils this year:

Course Choice Information Evening – Thursday, 18th February

S2, S3, S4 and S5 pupils will soon be making important decisions about their course choices for the next academic year.

Pupils, parents and carers are invited to come along to the Calderhead High School Course Choice Information Evening on Thursday, 18th February 2016.  All pupils and parents from S2, S3, S4 and S5 are most welcome. It’s an opportunity to speak with the Senior Management Team regarding course structure and the options process. Pupil Support staff will be on hand to answer and advise both pupils and parents. Tea and Coffee will be supplied and the event starts at 6 pm.

S4 and S5 will have a meeting with Mr Graham (6 pm) and then afterwards the opportunity to speak with Pupil Support staff.

S2 and S3 will have a meeting with Ms Darragh (6 pm) and thereafter the opportunity to speak with Pupil Support staff.

The course choice process is a very important time in the school calendar and as such we would encourage parents to help us to support our young people by attending the event with them.
