Calderhead High School pupils and Mrs Crosbie recently participated in the ‘Chemistry at Work’ event at the University of Strathclyde. This is an annual event sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry which allows school pupils an opportunity to appreciate the place of chemistry in everyday life and the world of work. Pupils participated in presentations and workshops and got the chance to work in the university labs on projects such as colour changing ink. The pupils really enjoyed learning about Chemistry at Work!
We were also delighted to see that our former pupil and recent guest speaker, Dr Michell Carlin, was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Fire Reach Course 2019
S3 pupils from Calderhead High and Taylor High School attended an intensive five day Fire Reach course with Scottish Fire and Rescue Services at Coatbridge Community Fire Station recently. The pupils learned about teamwork, resilience, health and safety and first aid as well as experiencing the role of being a firefighter. Well done boys!
Developing the Young Workforce Event – 22 January 2018
At Calderhead, we are keen to encourage pupils to plan for their future and explore all opportunities and career paths, including higher education, further education, employment, apprenticeships, training or volunteering. We will be hosting a Developing the Young Workforce careers event in the assembly hall on Tuesday, 22nd January from 5.30pm until 7.30pm.
Our careers event will give both parents and pupils an opportunity to meet representatives from universities, colleges and a range of career options including local and national employers. Each will have their own stall and will be delighted to answer any questions you might have about the options and opportunities they provide. This will be of particular interest to S2 and S4/5 pupils who will be making option choices soon and to pupils looking to secure a positive destination in the near future. However, everyone is welcome to come along.
Developing the Young Workforce Day
Calderhead High School held their annual Developing the Young Workforce day on Tuesday, 23rd January. The event has been held for the last three years and gives an opportunity for all year groups to develop their knowledge about the world of work and gain insight into a variety of pathways available when leaving school.
S1 pupils were involved in an interactive ‘teacher pathways’ quiz where they worked in small groups to identify a teacher based on clues about their journey through school to starting their teaching career. The pupils were interested to find out that some teachers did not achieve as well at high school as they might have expected. The pupils also realised that the journey into education doesn’t always happen immediately after school and university and that many members of staff started their teaching careers after a number of other jobs.
S3 pupils took part in the ‘Friends of Calderhead’ event before lunch. Former pupils Steven Lake and Tom Stewart (Scottish Fire and Rescue), Glenn Paterson (Gas Sure), Alex Stewart (Scottish Canals), Carrie Fleming (NHS), Gillian Tannahill (Skills Development Scotland) and Fraser McPhee (Amey) were joined by Maths teacher Mrs Johnston’s brother, Ross Mitchell (Lloyds Banking Group), and community police officer, PC Susan Rooney, to provide workshops regarding the line of work they are involved in. These sessions gave insight into the type of work that is involved in a variety of sectors and the skills and qualities required to be successful. Many of the speakers also spoke of their own time at Calderhead High School and we heard about the impact that not only academic qualifications but experiences and skills learned have had on their life.
In the afternoon a traditional Careers Fayre took place with 24 providers setting up stalls with a vast array of information, prospectuses and freebies. Pupils were able to spend time speaking to staff from a variety of local and national firms, training providers and Further and Higher Educational establishments to gain knowledge about the entry requirements and recruitment process.
Thanks go out to all the providers who attended and passed on valuable information to our young people, many of whom are now engaging with the application process and actively seeking opportunities for post school destinations.
Skills Scotland Glasgow
S4 pupils recently attended the Skills Scotland Glasgow event at the SECC in Glasgow to get some information about future careers and opportunities. There were a number of stands and seminars offering careers advice and information on jobs, volunteer opportunities, careers with the armed services, traineeships, apprenticeship schemes and many other opportunities.
Pupils also had the chance to try many activities, including building a wall, plumbing a tap and wiring a light bulb/doorbell; using an augmented reality demonstration to look for technical data on cars and identifying the engine and transmission components; working with glass and metal at the City of Glasgow College arts and crafts stand; designing fashion accessories using upcycled materials; driving an articulated dump truck, controlling a tower crane and steering a truck and trailer using Go Construct’s plant and construction simulator; using a raspberry pi selfie roulette app; and trying The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow’s virtual reality laparoscopy simulator as used by trainees surgeons.

Careering Into Science
The Glasgow Science Centre visited the school last week to give a presentation and workshop to our S1 pupils. The presentation was called “Careering into Science” and talked about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers and how choosing to study Science can lead into these. The workshop was called “Bodyworks” and gave pupils a chance to get hands on in learning about how your body works really hard every second of every day to keep you alive and how to help your body by keeping fit and healthy.
FOCUS West visits
S3 and S4 pupils recently attended the University of Strathclyde as part of the Focus West programmes.
FOCUS West (Focus On College and University Study – West of Scotland) is part of the national Schools for Higher Education Programme, based in Glasgow. The programme is delivered by staff and students from colleges and universities in the west of Scotland, and provides pupils with an exciting opportunity to experience college and university, meet current students and take part in interesting, challenging and relevant activities.

Careers Event 2017
Calderhead High School held a Careers event at school on Wednesday, 25 January 2017. In the morning the ‘Friends of Calderhead’ (former pupils, parents and relatives) gave a short 20 minute presentation detailing their own personal experience of school, the grades that they attained and the journey they had taken leading them to their current role. Our S3 pupils then had the opportunity to hear insightful, inspiring, and honest representations of working in an industry that they had expressed interest in. Thanks go to all the ‘friends of Calderhead’: Gordon Muir, Ross Mitchell, Kim Milroy, Lauren Brown, Gillian Tannahill, Steven Smith, Billy Morley, Steven Lake, Tom Stewart and Emma Reid for their input at the event. S1 and S2 pupils took part in a teacher pathway quiz.
In the afternoon, twenty one providers attended a more traditional careers fayre, which was hosted in the assembly hall.
The final session of the day involved S5/6 pupils, parents of pupils and members of the community who were able to access all the support and services the providers could offer.

Calderhead High School is hosting a Careers Event at school on 25th January . This event will include workshops and talks by former pupils and friends of the school and there will also be over twenty different stalls in the Assembly Hall with information about a wide range of careers.

We offer work experience placements, employer visits, visits to training providers, University and College campus visits, application form support, and community projects – including charity work. Positive Destinations and Developing the Young Workforce
50 S4 pupils attended the Skills Scotland Event at the SECC on Wednesday, 26 October 2016. All the pupils enjoyed the visit and came away with some useful information to help with their decision making for the future.
Skills Scotland events bring young people face-to-face with employers, training providers, further education colleges, universities, professional bodies and sector specific organisations to help young people to make better transitions and identify effective career pathways that will help them to move into sustainable employment.
