Calderhead High School’s Library was transformed into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy to celebrate Harry Potter Book Night and pupils enjoyed a myriad of Harry Potter related activities. Mrs Crosbie started the event with an excellent Potions class, where pupils tried some magic experiments including catching goblin eggs, creating goblin slime and catching a bothersome poltergeist. Pupils were then ‘sorted’ into their various Hogwarts houses and visited Ollivander’s wand shop where they created their own magic wands. As Chinese New Year had taken place earlier that week, we were delighted to welcome Catherine Lumsden, a former Tianjin scholar, who taught us spells in Mandarin and some useful phrases to use when meeting Chinese wizards and witches. We finished the event with a spell casting competition and Robert and Logyne were worthy winners. A great time was had by all.

  • The BBC have just uploaded eight Production Modern Apprenticeships in Glasgow that are open until 6th March.
  • There are 17 Craft Engineering with SSE Modern Apprenticeships across the north region of Scotland that are open until the end of February.
  • GSK have opportunities in Manufacturing, Engineering and Health and Safety in Montrose that are open for another week.
  • OGTAP have over 70 positions across Edinburgh and Aberdeen for Technical Assistant Modern Apprenticeships that are open until the end of February.

S2 and S4/ S5 pupils will soon be making important decisions about their course choices for the next academic year.

You are invited to attend an Information Evening to discuss the Option Choice process on Thursday 21 February at 6.00 pm. This will give you an opportunity to meet with members of
the Senior Management and Pupil Support Teams to discuss in detail your child’s progress and future pathways.

Developing the Young Workforce Event – 22 January 2018

careers logoAt Calderhead, we are keen to encourage pupils to plan for their future and explore all opportunities and career paths, including higher education, further education, employment, apprenticeships, training or volunteering. We will be hosting a Developing the Young Workforce careers event in the assembly hall on Tuesday, 22nd January from 5.30pm until 7.30pm.

Our careers event will give both parents and pupils an opportunity to meet representatives from universities, colleges and a range of career options including local and national employers. Each will have their own stall and will be delighted to answer any questions you might have about the options and opportunities they provide. This will be of particular interest to S2 and S4/5 pupils who will be making option choices soon and to pupils looking to secure a positive destination in the near future. However, everyone is welcome to come along.

Christmas Assembly

Photo of Christmas baubleStaff and pupils enjoyed a whole school Christmas Assembly this morning. David and Lynn introduced all our talented acts, with performances from the school choir; our resident pipes and drums; and our rock band fresh from their success at NLC Rockfest’s Battle of the Bands. We also heard from Jennifer Deighan on flute; Andrew Prentice on trombone and Kenzie Steel and on trumpet; and Jack Stewart and Jennifer Deighan singing a beautiful rendition of ‘Real Love’. Shae Carroll, Eileen Boyle and Adam Ferguson also read the Christmas story for us.

Christmas Books

S1 and S2 pupils were excited to receive a surprise early Christmas present this week – each pupil got their own book to keep.

At Calderhead High School, we are committed to promoting reading for pleasure and as well as celebrating reading throughout the year, we take part in initiatives such as the First Minister’s Reading Challenge.

We were delighted to be able to gift the books to the pupils and hope they enjoy reading them over the Christmas break.

Book Week Scotland

Book Week Scotland took place from Monday 19 – Sunday 25 November 2018. We are dedicated to promoting reading for pleasure and  we enjoyed the excuse to drop everything and read!

Here are just some of the great events that took place over Book Week Scotland:

  • The English department ran a sponsored Readathon for all S1-S2 pupils.
  • S1 and S2 pupils who we  made significant progress in reading, are avid readers or have shown signs of sustained effort in Literacy attended the ‘Book Bistro’ where they read as they sipped  hot chocolate with marshmallows.
  • the winners of our ‘Rebel’ creative writing contest were announced with Sarah in S1 and Hannah in S2 declared the winners. Robert and Mason (S1) and the Chelsea and Chelsea (S2) were runners up.
  • Comic Book Club talked about some of our excellent Scottish comic book and graphic novelists.
  • We hosted a ‘Drop Everything and Read’ event across the school where pupils were encouraged to read books, comics, revision notes, class textbooks … the aim was to get as many pupils reading in as many subjects as possible whilst learning at the same time.
  • There was also be a reading lunch for S3-S6 in the library at lunchtime.
  • Staff were treated to copies of the free “Rebel” short story collection produced by the Scottish Book Trust.
  • The week ended with a  special Scottish book group meeting at lunchtime.

Christmas Fayre 2018

Christmas ElfOur annual  Christmas Fayre took place in the school on Saturday, 1 December 2018. The event was organised by our S4 Achieve class who planned, organised and facilitated our fantastic Christmas Fayre (and helped set up and clear away).

Visitors were treated to excellent performances throughout the Fayre by our bagpipers and drummers and school choir accompanied by Mrs Prucnal on piano. There were many different stalls, including some fantastic decorations created by the Technology Department. Refreshments including hotdogs, cakes. teas and coffee were available (not forgetting Logyne’s delicious reindeer chocolate lollies).

No Christmas Fayre would be complete without Santa, who was happy to meet everyone in his grotto.

There was also a tombola and raffle with some fabulous prizes and the S4 achieve class would like to congratulate all the raffle winners.  Winners can collect their prizes from the school office – don’t forget your ticket! Congratulations to all our lucky winners (click here for list of winners).

Children In Need Talent Show 2018

Staff and pupils at Calderhead High School were treated to an impressive array of talent at the school’s charity talent show on Friday, 16 November 2018.

The event was held to raise funds for Children In Need, a non-profitable charity which aims to support all children who are less well off whether it be through illness or poverty.

Our School Captains, Erin and David, were marvellous MCs and guided us through the myriad acts who participated in the talent show. We were all very impressed by the wonderful performers, who made us laugh and cry (and wince when we watched the leg waxing video). Special mention must go to S6 pupil, Fraser, whose sponsored headshave took place live on stage!

We have many fabulous singers at Calderhead and we really enjoyed hearing Madison, Morgan, Logyne, Yasmin, and a Turkish song from Stephen!  Sophie and Carly sang a duet and birthday girl Heather accompanied herself on the piano. Ellyn also played the piano for us.

We were very impressed with Kevin and Andrew’s magic show and Riley, Nathan and Douglas’ “duelling”  bagpipes and drums – we did try to clap along but couldn’t keep up!

Zuzanna and Heather treated us to a very limber gymnastic display and made us laugh with their choice of Muppets music.

The show closed with a spirited interpretation of “Baby Shark” by our staff dance troup.

Well done to everyone who took part and congratulation to all our wonderful performers.

You will also have an opportunity to see some of our talented pupils at “Calderhead’s Got Talent” on Monday 17th December at 7pm  in the Assembly Hall. Tickets cost £2 with funds going to the Beatson Cancer Charity. Please come along and support our very talented pupils.
