MacMillan Cancer Support – Coffee Morning

The School Captains and Prefects organised a coffee morning and non-uniform day in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support On Thursday, 22nd September. They also held a “guess how many spots on the cake” competition and raffle, which helped raise £570.45 for this great cause.

Pupils would like to give special thanks to Frames Sweetie shop in Harthill, who donated cakes and money to put towards the funds. Also thank you to Bells the Bakers and Crawford’s Pharmacy, who also gave cakes and loads of great raffle prizes, which were won by the teachers at the school.

National Poetry Day

Pupils at Calderhead High School helped celebrate National Poetry Day on 6th October. Poem postcards from the Scottish Poetry Library were handed out in the library and pupils enjoyed  poetry in the Library, including an impromptu  performance from Sahand in S2, who read his poem ‘Bang Bang’ – last heard at the National Poetry Slam competition at the Traverse Theatre.

Readathon

Pupils in S1 and S2 are taking part in a Readathon to raise money for new books and equipment for the English Department. The event will run in school the week beginning Monday 10th October and pupils will be encouraged to continue to read at home during the October holiday (Monday 17th to 21st October).

Sponsorship forms have been issued and it is hoped that all our S1 and S2 pupils will take part and be sponsored by friends and family to raise funds. Pupils will also have the opportunity to win fabulous prizes! The Readathon will encourage reading in a fun and relaxed atmosphere and we would ask that you support our pupils.

Scottish Youth Parliament

MYSP PosterThe Scottish Youth Parliament needs you! We’re looking for passionate, change-making young people, who aren’t scared to get their hands dirty and shout about what they believe in.

The SYP is not based around political parties but is about the issues that are important to young people. MSYPs do not represent political parties but stand to represent the views of young people within their area or organisation.

In order to do this our members consult with young people about the issues that are important to them and aim to represent these views to people who make decisions in local communities and also in national government . The SYP is a democratic organisation.

Anyone who wishes to represent the views of other young people and is between 14-25 can stand for election. MSYPs serve for two years. Members are elected into office by other young people and significant positions within the organisation are elected by the membership.

If you think you could be the next MSYP in this area get in touch with Elaine Byrne HSPO. Candidates names to be submitted before the end of October 16.

More information will be available at the Calderhead Information  night on Monday 10th October from 6.30pm-8.30pm.

christmas-box

We are still looking for donations for the shoe box appeal and the deadline has been extended to 18th November 2016.

We are looking for toiletries, toys, gloves, hats, scarves and any other suitable items that would be a welcome gift for children and adults. Sweets are also welcome but the expiry dates must be seen and must not expire before 2018. No chocolate, biscuits or cakes please. If you prefer to donate money instead that would also be welcome , as postage for the boxes needs to be paid.

You are also welcome to pack your own shoe box.

All donations are gratefully received.
