To face the challenges of the 21st century, each young person needs to have confidence in using mathematical skills, and Scotland needs both specialist mathematicians and a highly numerate population.
Learning through mathematics enables children and young people to:
- develop essential numeracy skills, including arithmetical skills which allow them to participate fully in society
- develop a secure understanding of the concepts, principles and processes of mathematics and apply these in different contexts, including the world of work
- have an understanding of the application of mathematics, its impact on our society past and present, and its potential for the future
- establish firm foundations for further specialist learning, including for those who will be the mathematicians of the future.
What will I learn
Life skills Mathematics is the study of Mathematics in real – life contexts. It focuses on developing numerical skills for learning, life and work. The courses motivate and challenge learners by enabling them to think through real – life situations involving mathematics.
Through Life-skills Mathematics, learners will develop their ability to use mathematical processes in real – life situations such as managing personal finances; using measurements, diagrams and time management skills to plan practical projects and interpreting and analysing information to draw conclusions.
What will I do?
Teachers will use a wide range of appropriate approaches to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills: whole class direct and interactive teaching; individual, paired and group activities; use of ICT: and use of practical equipment will all be features of your learning experience.
Self, peer and teacher assessment will be used to ensure you understand what is required and receive appropriate feedback on how to improve. At National level, pupils must pass all of the unit assessments to achieve on overall course award. These assessments take place during class time throughout the year.
