Expressive Arts

The expressive arts include experiences and outcomes in art and design, drama, dance and music.

Through the expressive arts, children and young people can have rich opportunities to be creative and imaginative and to experience inspiration and enjoyment.
They can come to understand the important roles of the arts in describing and changing society.
Through their experience of the expressive arts, children and young people can appreciate the contributions of the arts in the lives of individuals and communities.

Learning through the expressive arts enables children and young people to:

  • express themselves in different ways and be creative
  • experience enjoyment (and contribute to other people’s enjoyment) through creative and expressive performance and presentation
  • develop important skills specific to expressive arts and also transferable skills
  • develop an appreciation of aesthetic and cultural values and ideas
  • for some, prepare for advanced learning and future careers by building foundations for excellence in the expressive arts.

What will I learn?

Art and design qualifications provide learners with a broad, practical experience of art and design practice and related critical activities. Learners develop practical skills as they explore how to visually represent and communicate their thoughts and ideas through their work, and study the works of artists and designers.

In particular, you will develop the ability to:
• draw and create in a wide range of expressive media in both 2 and 3D.

• develop and communicate original design solutions through a design process in a response to a design brief.

• Express thoughts and feelings about the work of artists and designers.

What will I do?

Students will produce two units of work. One Expressive and one design. In both units you will select a theme and work through a process of investigation, development and outcome. Expressive themes include still life painting, portraiture, landscape or fantasy and imagination, Design areas covered include; textile, graphic, fashion, product and jewellery design.


Self peer and teacher assessment will be used to ensure you understand what is required and recieve appropriate feedback on how to improve. At National level, pupils must pass all of the unit assessments to achieve on overall course award. These assessments take place during class time throughout the year.

Music
What will I learn?

• You will learn about performing and creating music.
• You will develop a general interest in music
• You will develop performing skills
• You will develop basic composing skills
• You will develop an understanding of music

What will I do?

• Develop performing skills in solo and/or group settings on two selected instruments or on one instrument and voice
• Create music using straightforward compositional methods and music concepts.
• Develop understanding of the things that infience composers and their work.
• Develop undrstanding of music and musical literacy by listening to music and isentifying simple music signs, symbols and concepts.
• Identify areas for improvement in your work, with support and guidance.
