This is the first in a series of posts designed to provide parents and carers with an overview of the courses and learning opportunities available across the Business, Computing and Technical (BCT) Faculty.
Over the coming weeks and months, we will share information about each subject and course, including an overview of what pupils will learn, the staff involved and important dates throughout the school year, such as assessments and other key events.
We hope that these posts will provide parents and carers with a useful insight into the opportunities available within BCT and help keep you informed about your young person’s learning and progress throughout the year.
National 5 Computing Science
National 5 Computing Science gives pupils the opportunity to develop their understanding of how computers and digital technologies work, while building valuable problem-solving and programming skills.
Pupils learn how to design, write and test programs and explore areas such as software development, databases, web development and computer systems. Throughout the course, pupils are encouraged to think logically, solve problems and apply their knowledge to practical challenges.
The course provides a strong foundation for pupils who wish to continue studying Computing Science at Higher level, as well as developing useful skills that can be applied across a wide range of subjects and future careers.
Key Dates – Computing: National 4/5:
- November – National 5 Software Design and Development (SDD) written test
- December – Preliminary Examination
- February – N4 Added Value Unit (AVU) & National 5 Assignment
- Final Examination: Thursday 24th May (09:00 – 10:30)
Higher Computing Science
Higher Computing Science builds on the skills and knowledge developed at National 5, giving pupils the opportunity to explore Computing Science in greater depth.
Pupils develop more advanced programming and problem-solving skills and explore areas including software design and development, computer systems and databases. The course encourages pupils to analyse problems, develop effective solutions and apply their computational thinking skills to increasingly challenging tasks.
Higher Computing Science provides an excellent foundation for further study at college or university and can support progression towards the wide range of careers available within computing, technology and the wider digital sector.

- December – Database Design and Development (DDD) topic test
- February – Preliminary Examination
- April – Computer systems topic test
- Final Examination: Thursday 24th May (09:00 – 11:00)
