We support children as they move through the stages in school by building strong relationships, maintaining consistency and ensuring clear communication with families.
Information is carefully shared between staff so that learning continues smoothly and children feel confident, settled and ready for their new class.
Our Transition Provision
We support all children to feel confident, prepared and positive about moving to a new class each year. Transition is an important part of ensuring continuity in learning, wellbeing and relationships.
Towards the end of the session, children take part in planned transition experiences which help them become familiar with their new classroom environment and teacher. This supports children to feel settled and ready for the new school year.
Staff work closely together to share important information about each child. This includes learning, wellbeing and any support in place, ensuring that every child is known and supported as an individual.
Children are supported to:
- become familiar with their new classroom and routines
- build relationships with their new teacher and peers
- reflect on their learning and achievements
- feel confident about the year ahead
We use our “What Matters to Me” approach to support this process. Children review and share their learning, progress and what is important to them, helping their new teacher to understand them as individuals.
We also value strong home–school partnerships. Families are supported with information about the new school year and are encouraged to share anything they feel is important to help their child settle successfully.
We also support children who join our school at other times of the year. We take time to get to know each child and their family, share key information with previous settings where appropriate, and provide opportunities to visit and meet staff and peers. A named adult and peer support help children settle quickly and feel part of our school community.
Our transition activities are reviewed and refreshed regularly to ensure they remain meaningful, supportive and responsive to the needs of our children and families.
Enhanced Transition
Some children may benefit from additional support when moving to a new class.
Where this is the case, we plan enhanced transition arrangements tailored to the individual child. This may include additional visits, increased time with the new teacher, visual supports, or more personalised transition plans developed in partnership with families and relevant professionals.
Our aim is to ensure every child feels safe, supported and ready to continue their learning journey.
