The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Hi Everyone

Let’s learn about the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ this week. We love this story at nursery and it teaches us all about how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, days of the week and healthy eating. Maybe you have this story in your house……..

Days of the week

Do you remember our ‘Days of the week song’? (It is to the tune of the Adams family). Can you teach all your family our days of the week song?:

Days of the week (Clap, Clap),

Days of the week, Days of the week, Days of the week (Clap, Clap)

There’s Sunday and there’s Monday, there’s Tuesday and there’s Wednesday, there’s Thursday and there’s Friday and then there’s Saturday.

Days of the week are tricky maybe you could remember using some clues:

Which days do we normally go to nursery?
Which days do we not go to nursery?
Which days are called the weekend?
Which day did the caterpillar eat an apple, pears, plums etc?
What is a week? The caterpillar goes to sleep for 2 weeks.

Art work

Playdough: can you make a playdough caterpillar or a playdough butterfly?

Painting: maybe you could make some symmetrical butterflies by folding paper in half. Paint a pattern on one side of the fold then quickly fold the paper over and rubbing it, when you open your paper you will have a perfect butterfly.

Counting & Measure

This book is a great way to reinforce numbers to 7:

Count the days
Count the fruit each day, maybe a grown up could write the number and get your child to draw that number of fruit (e.g. 1 apple, 2 pears etc)
The caterpillar keeps getting bigger throughout the story, this is a good way to reinforce size:
- Maybe put things in order of size
- Talk about the sizes of the people in the family
- Talk about how they have grown since they were babies (maybe do a timeline using photographs of your child growing up)

Healthy Eating & exercise

This is a great book to talk about healthy eating especially because the caterpillar gets big and strong while he is eating the healthy foods and has a sore tummy when he eats too much unhealthy food.

Talk about which foods are healthy and which foods are a treat.
You could sort the foods in your house into two groups: healthy and treats.
Maybe keep a chart of how many healthy foods your child has eaten today.

Maybe you could try ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ cosmic kids yoga to do some exercise too

Goldilocks and the three bears

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Goldilocks and the Three Bears is another of our favourite stories in nursery that is all about bears. You might have the book at home but if not here is a wee video to remind you of the story.

This story helps us learn lots of things:

The number 3 (why don’t you make 3 your number for today?)

Can you count to 3? I’m am sure you can so let’s learn more about the number 3.

Can you find the number 3 in your house (on the clock, on the cooker etc) or when you are on a walk (door numbers, wheelie bin numbers, car registrations)?

Can you write the number 3 (with pens, crayons, paint)?

Can you draw three things (3 flowers, 3 spiders, 3 bears)?

Can you put things into sets of 3 (toys, pegs, pencils, pasta shapes etc)?

Measure

In the story there are lots of things that are small, medium and large.

Can you remember what? (the three bears, the bowls of porridge, the three chairs and the three beds)

Can you find sets of 3 things and put them in size order (toy cars, teddy bears, dolls, books, shoes, socks, spoons)

Shape

We could have a shape of the day too.

Why not make it a triangle, it has 3 of everything – 3 corners, 3 sides.

You could go on a shape hunt looking for triangles, it’s a tricky shape to find so you will need to look carefully.

Can you draw triangles (with chalk on the ground, paint, crayons)

If a grown up cuts out lots of triangles from paper or card you could maybe make a sticky picture or pattern with triangles too.

Art and craft ideas

You could draw a picture of 3 things one big, one medium sized and one little (a picture of you, your mummy and your daddy would be a good idea, or 3 flowers or maybe even the 3 bears).

You could make Goldilocks and the 3 bears puppets. Draw the characters (or maybe a grown up could draw them/print out a picture and you could colour them in) then cut them out and put them on lolly pop sticks. Puppets are great for retelling the story.

Maybe you could make playdough bears too.

Maybe you could make some bears using paper plates.

Teddy Bears Picnic

You could maybe have a teddy bears picnic. You could invite all your teddy bears or just three like in the story.

You will need to remember to have a blanket or table to host your party.

Remember to give everyone/or bear a cup and a plate.

Maybe you could have teddy bear crisps and teddy bear sweets at your picnic.

You could even read or tell your bears the story of the three bears now that you are an expert.

Story time

Have a look at all your story books, do you have any other books with bears in them? If you find any you could maybe read them with Mummy and Daddy then tell us all about it when you come back to nursery.

If your Mummy and Daddy want to share anything you have been doing they could put it on twitter for everyone to see or they could email pictures to Miss Copeland on Kcopeland@westfield.n-lanark.sch.uk and she will put it on the blog for you.

We went on a bear hunt

We had great fun listening to the ‘we’re going on a bear hunt’ story and doing the cosmic kids yoga. We put teddy bears in our window and drew pictures of bears too. We might go on a bear hunt today to see if we can find bears in other people’s windows.

Let’s all go on a bear hunt

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all having fun at home, I bet you are all loving having so much time with your Mummy and Daddy. I thought you might want to go on a bear hunt with your family today. This is one of our favourite stories in nursery and we have done it lots of times so you will be an expert and you can show your family how to do all the actions for the book then you could maybe do the cosmic kids yoga.

We often do cosmic kids yoga on our smartboard in nursery so you will be an expert doing that too.

Have fun and maybe you could draw a picture of a bear and get your Mummy or Daddy to put it on the blog for all your friends to see.

You could also go on a real bear hunt when you go out for a walk because lots of people are putting teddy bears in their window for children to spot, just like the rainbow’s we made and put in our window a few weeks ago.

Maybe you could put a teddy bear in your window for other children to spot too.

All the nursery ladies and I are missing you all so much, we hope to see you all very soon.

Hazard awareness

Another activity from last weeks suggested activities grid: Hazard Awareness.

Olivia and Amelia had fun doing a hazard awareness check of their house, identifying the things in the house the things they can touch but always need to be careful with orange cards for ‘be careful’ and things that they never ever touch with red cards for ‘danger’,

Let’s have some fun measuring.

Hello Nursery Boys and Girls, the Ladies have been talking about measuring and different sizes.

We were wondering what you like to measure, how you measure things and can you talk about different sizes and amounts.

Are you ready for some challenges?

You choose the ones you want to do.

Can you find something bigger than you, something the same size as you and something smaller than you?

Can you build a tower the height of your knee, your waist, your chin, your ear, your height?

Can you measure how many of your hands it takes to measure the leg of your table?

Can you make or build something the same size as your foot?

Can you make or build a home for one of your toys?

Can you work out different ways to measure sizes and amounts and tell us how you did it?

There are lots of suggested measuring activities on the weekly sheets for you to try too.

Let’s try some experimenting

Hello Boys and Girls, the Ladies were thinking this week would be a good time for you little scientists to try some experimenting.

That’s when we wonder about things and then try to find out the answers to our questions.

You might be wondering……

What happens when you add water to dry stuff?

What happens when colours get mixed together?

How can a rainbow be made?

What sinks and what floats?

How do things grow?

How are ice lollies made?

(diced or liquidised fruit mixed with juice or yogurt in any plastic mould and freeze)

How can we measure how much rain has fallen?

There are so many things to wonder about and so many answers to find we think it will take all of us to experiment.

Let us know what you wonder about and if you do any experiments to find answers.
