Online Safety Workshop

Letters have gone out to parents of P4-7 children offering places at our online safety workshop on Monday 12th June, 6-7:30pm.

In school we work with pupils to equip them with the skills to keep themselves safe online and we would like to invite you this event to raise awareness of the ways in which you can offer the same support at home.

This is being provided by ‘respectme’, Scotland’s anti-bullying service, to help parents explore the potential dangers and challenges with the online world that our children have access to.

It will cover:

  • How young people use technology- the risks/challenges
  • Popular social media apps- the pros and cons
  • Practical advice on parental controls, privacy and safety settings with an opportunity to explore your own social media settings
  • Talking to your children about keeping safe online

Places are limited so please return the letter ASAP if you would like to be involved.

After collecting lots of snails on our minibeast hunt on Thursday the children were keen to explore our little shell friends. Using sticker dots to identify the snails, the children creatively measured the distance that each snail travelled using string! Very impressive Primary 1! Learning measure sure is fun in Primary One! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐ŸŒโœ‚๏ธโœ๏ธ After

๐Ÿฆ‹ Primary 1 had a super afternoon learning about how butterflies collect nectar! Butterflies have long tube like mouths, just like a straw (called a proboscis). ย Theย children had great fun pretending to be butterflies collecting nectar from their flower cups using their straws! ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

One of our butterflies even gave us a little demonstration, to which one of our children announced “The butterfly is using its proboscis”! What clever butterflies and children we have in our class! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Primary 1 had a super morning on Thursday for ‘Outdoor Classroomย Day’! First they had fun using chalk to creatively display the common words they have been learning ๐Ÿ–, then they went on a ‘Shape Hunt’ around the school grounds. ๐Ÿ”บ๐Ÿ”ทโšซ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป.

P7/6 Outdoor Learning Day / Empty Classroom Day

Primary 7/6 have had a great day focussing on learning outdoors! We have used the outdoor space around our school to enhance our learning in Maths, Literacy and Problem Solving. Here are some examples of what we got up to!

Den Building

ย Working together to problem solve.

Success!!

Check out our learning conversations here! —> ย IMG_0106

Maths:

Compass Points and Directionsย

Using a compass app on the iPads the boys and girls worked as partners to create a set of directions that would navigate others around the playground. The recorded these using the notes app on the iPads too!

Literacy: Imaginative Writing

We used our playground environmentย as inspiration for our latest piece of imaginative writing…Honey I Shrunk Primary 7/6!

In pairs the children investigated the school grounds and used iPads to take pictures of settings that they could use in their stories. They used the notes app to insert the pictures and note down ideas and then shared these with their peers. We are hoping to share some examples of our finished work with you soon!

Empty Classroom Day: Haiku inspired by the local environment

Today P3/2 & P6 met up for ‘Outdoor Classroom Day.’ We left our classrooms behindย to head out on a walk around the local area to gather inspiration forย writing poetry. Mrs Gordon led us round the back of the housing estate and we were amazed to find an unused railway track. Mrs G and P6 told P3/2 all about the areas mining history and explained about howย that was the old railways tracks purpose.ย

We then walked down along the Auchter water and P6 told P3/2 all about when they went there to release the trout they had been taking care of last term.

Throughout the walk P6 supported the P3/2s by helping them take notes about what they could see, hear, feel and smell. We then returned to school and P3/2 then had the chance to be experts and tell the P6’s what they knew about Haiku poetry. Together, using their notes from the walk, all of the pupils came up with some fantastic Haikus.

Swift strong swans swimming
Brilliant bees buzzing by us
Glorious green grass

White swans on the lake
Jaggy nettles make a mess
Auchter water flows

Bees buzz in the sky
Dog barking in the long grass
White flowers look nice

The pupils produced some fantastic poetry as you can see!

Mrs Gordon and Miss Cruickshank are very impressed at how well the children worked together today.ย The P6 pupils were fantastic leaders and did their best to encourage and support the younger pupils. P3/2 worked really hard with their P6 buddies. They showed good listening and were able to share their ideas in order to produce some tremendousย work!
