MPS’s Recycling Facilities

As a result of the questionnaire on recycling facilities which the Eco Committee created and sent out via twitter, we now have up and running MPS’s very own recycling facilities. Here is what is on offer:

Rag Bag

We are continuing to use the Rag Bag bin which is located in the car park. This recycles textiles such as clothing, paired shoes, handbags and belts. The Rag Bag is emptied quarterly and the school receives money depending on the weight of textiles being recycled. This a great way to recycle and help raise money for the school, it is estimated that approximately 1.75 million tonnes of clothing waste is produced in the UK every year. To recycle using the Rag Bag you can simply go into the carpark and pop all your textiles in the Rag Bag bin.

Battery Recycling

We have a new battery recycling box which recycles all household batteries as putting them in the bin means they rot away in landfill sites and the chemicals can leak into the ground. This can cause soil and water pollution. When chemicals contaminate soil and water, harm can be caused to animals, humans and the environment.

Ink Cartridge Recycling

We also have a new Ink Cartridge recycling box which recycles HP & Cannon, Brother, Samsung, Canon, Dell & Lexmark cartridges only. Ink Cartridges are made up of a combination of plastics, metals, foam, ink and toner. Throwing them into landfill represents a waste of resources and contributes to the growing problem of electronic waste.

Spectacle Recycling

We will also be offering recycling of Spectacles in conjunction with Marie Curie Charity. They recycle Spectacles by sending them to communities across Africa, India and Eastern Europe.

The recycling boxes for Batteries, Ink Cartridges and Spectacles are located at the entrance just outside the Primary 7 classroom.

Batteries, Ink Cartridges and Spectacles can be sent into school with children, and staff will advise of an appropriate time to deposit them in the boxes.

Primary 4 Topic Visit to New Lanark

Primary 4 had a great day at New Lanark where they had a tour of the village including the falls of Clyde, the Mill Lade, the water wheel, the mill, the mill workers houses and the village shop. Our guide Lesley was very impressed at the classes knowledge about New Lanark and Robert Owen.

They enjoyed the Annie McLeod experience ride…

They dressed up in the classroom in the school uniforms which the children who went to Robert Owen’s School wore…

They had fun in the lovely park…

We will also be having a whole school assembly on the afternoon of Thursday 22nd February where the Eco Committee will be teaching the school the new Eco Code. This day will be a celebration of the school achieving their Green Flag Award, and the Eco Committee members will be presented with their Eco Committee badges. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Eco Committee and the Gardening / Eco after school club for all their hard work so far this year. Let’s continue this as we work to maintain our Green Flag Status. We hope for good weather this summer to allow our garden to flourish to benefit the school and community.Image result for eco green flag

World Book Day 2018

The Pupil Council are planning activities to help us celebrate World Book Day this year. One of the things they asked to do was to have another book bring and buy sale.

Children can donate books that they have finished reading from Monday 26th to Wednesday 28th February (good condition only please).

On Thursday 1st March, all children will have the opportunity to come and buy a different book for 20p.

Money raised will be used to order new books for classroom libraries.

Further information regarding other activities for World Book Day will be posted by the Pupil Council soon.

Thank you for your support.

RSPB Bird Garden Bird Watch

At Morningside one of our Eco Committees priorities is Biodiversity which involves us making our playground wildlife friendly. The Eco Committee and the Gardening / Eco after school clubs have been working hard in the garden to encourage wildlife for example making bird cakes, refilling the fat ball feeders regularly and planting wildlife friendly flowers.

Now it is your turn to join in and help us find out if our hard work is paying off. We would ask you to take part in the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch which run between 27th – 29th January 2018.

All it takes is an hour and all you have to do is simply watch the birds in your garden or local park, then fill in the form to tell the RSPB what you see. The Big Garden Birdwatch gives the RSPB an astonishing amount of information about how the wildlife is fairing e.g. what is thriving, and what’s under threat and then they can find out why.

All results of your bird watch should be submitted by 13th February, you can do this by placing your form in an envelope and addressing it to Freepost BIG GARDEN BIRD WATCH. Or you can enter you results online at rspb.org.uk/birdwatch. The RSPB will summaries the information and announce the results of the Big Garden Bird Watch by 28th March.

All the information you need is attached in the few documents at the bottom of the page.

Happy Bird Watching!

Miss Jones & the Eco Committee

Thank you for those who have contributed so far. Some more responses would be very much appreciated!

Please take part in our survey to help us develop our new curriculum rationale.

Feel free to ask friends and family who know our area well for ideas. As much information (including specific people/business links who would be interested) would be great.

Thank you for your continued support.

Adverse Weather Information

Dear Parents/Carers,

This information may be particularly relevant as snow is forecast and service delivery may be interrupted if we experience any severe weather conditions.  Let’s hope that you do not need to use this information.

In severe weather, parents should make their arrangements taking account of the following:

  • Travel to and from school may be difficult. Parents should check that their children can get to and from school safely before they set out.
  • Some transport may not operate normally. Parental arrangements should take into account notified and unexpected cancellations.  School bus may not be able to operate a normal service in severe weather.  It may not be possible for school transport to pick up or drop off pupils in the normal locations and alternative arrangements, for example at a main road, may be necessary.
  • Please note that the bus companies will make their own decision on travel arrangements and contact the HT.

Information will be updated on the North Lanarkshire website, www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk from approx. 7am.

Facebook and Twitter feeds @nlcwinter will also be updated.

Also keep an eye on our own twitter page @morningsideps and our website/blog glowscotland.gov.uk/nl/morningsideblog.

These feeds can be updated remotely by staff whereas our text system can only be updated from in school.  This therefore relies on staff to be in school and text updates may not come through as quickly as twitter or blog updates.

Information will appear on the NLC website should schools need to close for any reason but this will only be in exceptional circumstances.

Information will also be broadcast on the radio through North Lanarkshire protocol procedures.

The school telephone number is 01698 274938. However, please check online for information before calling as phone lines will be busy and staff availability may be affected.

I hope you find this information useful as we are trying to plan ahead.

Yours Sincerely,

Jennifer Gardiner

Last week Primary 1 investigated ‘What might affect how far a toy car can travel?’

They had great fun racing toy cars to see if the gradient of a hill (big or little) and surface (rough or smooth) would affect how far the red or blue car would travel.

We recorded all of our predictions and results – have a look at our photos to see what we found out….
