Star of the Month

Each month one pupil from every S1 English class will be chosen as the ‘Star of the Month’. This is to reward those pupils who have demonstrated good work in class, who have applied themselves fully and always given of their best, to those who have followed instructions well and displayed excellent behaviour in class and also those who have been polite and helpful.

Every month, the winners of the ‘Star of the Month’ will receive a certificate and will have their names posted below. They may also become eligible for any special rewards/trips which the department runs.

Good luck and well done!

Events

Several events are run by the department at different stages in the year. Past events have included pantomime outings at Christmas, theatre and cinema trips as special rewards and also a trip to London at the end of the school year for senior pupils.

Details of all events will be posted on here, as well as advertised in class. Keep your eyes and ears open and don’t miss out!

Competitions

The department runs several competitions during the school year. Some are whole class competitions, including our annual World Book Day projects, while others are for individual pupils to enter, like the ‘Literary Star of the Month’ award.

Check back here on a regular basis to find out more about how to enter.

Miss McGough (Librarian)

  1. What one thing do you want to do before you’re old and grey? – Fly in a Tiger Moth plane, preferably with Indy Jones for company.
  2. If could have any special power, what would it be? – Fly, as free as a bird. I think you can see from this that I’d like to fly!
  • Few of My Favourite Things… Music, books, chocolate and cakes. Too many chocolates and cakes and I’ll never get off of the ground!

Mrs Smith (English, Media & Drama)

1.My ultimate dream is to perform on Broadway and have the leading role in a musical such as Les Miserable or Miss Saigon.

2. I long for the ability to freeze time; especially to avoid wasting so much time straightening my unruly hair.

3. Chocolate, pasta and coffee (not at the same time!) are my favourite foods.

4. This constantly changes. I admire many famous actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp and Robert Downey Jr. In terms of having a guilty pleasure it undoubtedly has to be the entire cast of Grey’s Anatomy and Gossip Girl.

5. This is tricky and probably depends on my mood. However, Moulin Rouge, Beaches or Love Actually springs to mind. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve watched them and I can probably recite most of the lines.

6. I love all the classic Jane Austen novels and I particularly enjoyed reading Atonement. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Bridget Jones’ Diary and My Sister’s Keeper were all books that I found fascinating in their own way. My favourite children’s book, without question, is Goodnight Mister Tom and my favourite play has to be Tony Kushner’s Angels in America.

Miss Douglas (English & French)

  1. Star in a West End musical, preferably as Swallow in Whistle Down the Wind. I could do that, right?
  2. I would like the ability to never grow old and grey (there’s always one). In all seriousness, the special power I would like, is the ability to do maths Does that count as a special power? I think so because I am a little envious of people who are really talented at maths, and I always wish I could be better.
  3. Favourite celebrity: This is difficult….NOT! Elton John without a doubt. He is my role model for many reasons.
  4. Favourite food: Spicy, chicken fajitas, or pasta shells with chicken, bacon, courgette, mangetout, babycorn and a tomato and basil sauce. Yummy!
  5. Favourite book: Favourite childhood novel is ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl, which I still enjoy reading every now and again, and my grown-up favourite is ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’ by Muriel Spark.
  6. Favourite film: Are you kidding? This is far too difficult. I cannot narrow it down to just one so I will do my best to keep my list short: Schindler’s List, A League of Their Own, Beaches, The Blues Brothers and Toy Story 2…and many, many more!

Mrs Neilson (DHT and English)

  1. I am lucky to have done a lot of things I have always wanted to, including taking a helicopter ride into the Grand Canyon and sailing down the Colorado River but there are still more things I hope to squeeze in before it is too late! I would love to see Australia and the Great Barrier Reef in particular.
  2. A special power I would like to have is to find a cure for all the horrible illnesses which ruin peoples’ lives. In a more lighthearted vein, I would like the power to have a volume control for noisy chatty pupils which I could use whenever I wanted to!
  3. Not really into celebrities but I like people who have done well in their profession for many years. People like Ryan Giggs, Helen Mirren ( actress), Michael Parkinson etc. I also have a very soft spot for Micael Buble and Donny Osmond!! ( a blast from the past).
  4. I love all the Disney movies. Toy Story 3 is my current favourite.
  5. Favourite food – pasta, Veg and really good fish dishes to name but three!
  6. I love the classic Austen novels but Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is my favourite adult book. A close second is Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier, which I read many many years ago and keep meaning to re- read., I have to say that as a child I loved all the Enid Blyton books – especially the Famous Five and the schools books. I also love Private Peaceful which made me cry!

Miss Daly (English)

  1. Before I’m old and grey I would like to travel to Russia and see the Bolshoi Ballet perform.
  2. If I could have any special power I would like to be able to freeze time.
  3. Food – Um, tough one. I love to cook and I’m good at eating. Steak pie and mash!
  4. My favourite celebrity of the moment is Kim Kardashian.
  5. Film – Lord of the Rings
  6. Book – ‘Persuasion’ by Jane Austen
