Curriculum for Excellence

A Curriculum for Excellence is the name given to the broad education for all 3 – 18 year olds in Scotland. It is designed so that everyone can get the most from their learning and, through a wide variety of experiences, are successful in achieving the specific learning outcomes. This means that HOW we learn is just as important as WHAT we are learning.

A Curriculum for Excellence aims to fulfil four capacities:

  • Successful Learners
  • Effective Contributors
  • Confident Individuals
  • Responsible Citizens

The emphasis is placed not only on subject specific skills,  but general broader skills which will equip all pupils for a life in the wider world and work.

Here in the English department, a Curriculum for Excellence is currently in place for pupils in S1, S2 and S3. Following this, pupils then progress in S4 to follow the new course of National Qualifications, including National 4, National 5 and Higher.
