What is the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award?
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is one of the world’s leading youth achievement programmes, helping young people build confidence, resilience, independence and lifelong skills through a range of exciting challenges and experiences.
At Saint Matthew’s Academy, pupils complete a series of sections designed to encourage personal growth, teamwork and leadership. The award is open to pupils from S3 onwards and is supported by dedicated staff who volunteer their time to ensure every participant has the best possible experience.

Who can join?
The award is open to all pupils from S3 onwards.
Do I need previous experience?
No previous expedition or camping experience is needed. Full training and support are provided.
What equipment do I need?
Pupils will receive guidance on suitable clothing and equipment before expeditions take place. We have group equipment within the school and we are able to access personal equipment such as boots and waterproofs for anyone who requires them.
Is DofE difficult?
The award is designed to be challenging but achievable. Pupils are supported throughout by trained experienced staff.
How much does it cost?
The award cost varies depending on the level. The DofE charges the school £33 per Bronze and Silver participant and £40 per Gold. The school aims to keep the costs as low as possible and cost should not be a barrier to participating in the award.
How long does the award take?
Each level takes several months to complete depending on the sections and activities chosen.
