Numeracy

November 2020

This month we have been continuing with measurement and now know all of the units for measurement. We can tell you what g, kg, ml, l, mm, cm, m stands for and know when they should be used. To do this we used lots of different tools including scales, rulers, sticks and measuring jugs!

We also learned new ways to do addition and subtraction sums! We can now use the chimney sum method and some us can even carry the 1 if our sums add up to more than 9. We love doing these kinds of sums and have even added 4-digit sums together!

October 2020

Since the October holidays we have been looking at measurement, place value, addition, subtraction and finding mussing numbers in sums.

We have been learning all about non formal and formal measurements, looking at using our hands and feet to estimate and then measure objects like our tables, chairs, whiteboards and things we had in our trays. Then we used our rules to measure different thing in centimetres (cm). We can all now measure different things in different ways and can’t wait to learn even more!

Amazingly, we also managed to use empty number lines and hundred squares to work out which number was missing to finish sums like 6 + __ = 42!! All of us got more than 90% of the questions correct without much help from Mr Hughes too.

Term 1

This term we been looking at estimation and time and how these two topics can fit together to help each other.

Focussing on time we looked at half past, o’clock, quarter to and quarter past! We also began looking at 5 minute intervals and we are beginning to understand what each of the numbers on the clock means.

For estimation we estimated numbers and stars on a board as well as how long it would take us to complete tasks such as getting ready to go home, tidying the class, tidy our trays and how long I would take to walk around the school! We recorded our estimates and timed ourselves completing the task and then recorded the actual time. We had amazing fun completing this task.
