Welcome to Primary 4/5

Welcome to Primary 4/5 blog.

We have had a very busy first time with Miss Graham. In numeracy we have been working really hard to develop our mental agility skills. We have learnt a range of mental strategies, such as partitioning, counting on and back, doubles and near doubles, compensating and bridging through 10, to help with our addition and subtraction. We also focused on Place Value which gave us a better understanding of number and the value of digits. We discovered that some people found particular strategies easier than others to solve mental calculations. Using a range of games and activities to practice with our peers made our numeracy time fun.

In our writing we focused on the genre of persuasion. Before we started, we looked at examples and identified the features they include. For example, paragraphs, appropriate title, flattering and worrying language. We wrote a few pieces of writing such as a Hotel Brochure, an advert for a house and even a letter to Mrs Gilbert, trying to persuade her to let us go on holiday during term time. Although our letters were very persuasive, it might take more than just a letter this time!! 🙂

Furthermore, in our spelling time we have been using active resources to help us learn our spelling patterns and words. We even use our k’nex to spell them out!!

Our Context for Learning in term 1 was Travel and Transport. We had lots of fun learning all about how transport has changed throughout history, different types of transport and travel, inventors,  the forces of flight, internal combustion engine and even took part in team challenges to build models of both cars and boats. Skills such as being good listeners, sharing and being fair all helped us complete our tasks successfully.

Throughout Term 1 Primary 4/5 also learnt about feelings and how different reactions can either be healthy or unhealthy. We discussed the times when we have felt these different feelings and shared how we  reacted. We’ve also been trying really hard to have a growth mind set. We learnt that our brain is a muscle and that when we try new and challenging things our brains grow and get stronger. Everyday we have been trying to face new challenges with a positive outlook and know that although we find it hard that we should just keep trying.

New school values – SHINE

We decided as a school some new school values. Our acronym is SHINE which stands for Success, Honest, Included, Nurtured leading to Excellence! Miss Edwards created a SHINE puzzle to take home for active homework to help us and our parents learn them. Here we are practising the puzzle in class so that we were experts for sharing it with our parents!

Olympic Health Week day 1

Tere from primary 1B (hello in Estonian)

We have had a busy start to health week with a visit from some nursery children who will be coming into primary 1 after the summer holidays.  We also enjoyed doing yoga in the classroom and felt really relaxed afterwards.

In the afternoon we went outside and learned some rugby skills.

We were very lucky to have a visit this morning from Steph and Fiona who came to tell us about the Feis. This is a traditional music festival which takes place in Elgin every year to keep Scottish music alive. Children are allowed to come and try the instruments for free, once they are eight years old.

Steph showed us her beautiful harp, called a clarsach in Gaelic. Fiona played her penny whistle and together they played some Scottish tunes for us. It was then our turn to try playing them. We learnt all about the strings on the harp and how to play it. Some lucky people were chosen to have a go!

Fiona let a group of us play the penny whistles and we learnt how to blow softly to make a lovely sound.

We all enjoyed the sound of the harp – it sounded like Chinese music and made us feel very calm!

What a lovely visit – maybe we can try the fiddle, drum, harp and whistle!DSC01835

Egyptians in P3B

Throughout term one our topic focus was the Incredible Egyptians. We have covered many aspects through this theme from pyramids, pharaohs and Egyptian jewellery to our most recent focus on mummies and how to mummify a body. We are continuing with this topic in term two before moving on to a Mexican Christmas.

Fairy Tales in P1C

Last term when we were choosing a book from our book corner, we found a trail of sparkles which came from the window and led us right into the book shelf! At the end of the trail was a letter from The Friendly Dragon. He visited our classroom to ask for our help to rebuild Fairyland. We have been helping him by reading lots of fairy tales both in school and at home. We have been learning about lots of different people, places and very exciting stories. There have been beanstalks and magic beans, castles and dragons and princes and princesses. We have written back to the Friendly Dragon to tell him that we are helping him and we hope to get another letter from him soon.
