P6GS W/C 04.05.2020
Hello everyone, we hope you are all continuing to be busy and active. We are really pleased to have heard from some of you via our Microsoft Team Chat! If you haven’t yet managed to join, please use the information from last week’s learning page to help you. It would be great to get a little “hello” from everybody and for the classes to hear and speak to each other. Some of you have been uploading files to share with the group which is amazing! But remember if you have a personal question or a piece of work that you want to share privately, then you can send it through your Glow email to us.
This Friday, 8th May, we celebrate ‘Victory in Europe Day’ which marks the end of the 2nd World War in Europe. As this is a holiday, we won’t be in touch with you that day. We have incorporated VE day into your learning this week but this link has many more activities that you could try if you would like to take part in more VE day and WW2 related learning and activities. https://www.teachingideas.co.uk/world-war-2/world-war-2-day-ideas
Please keep sending us your photos as we have loved seeing what you have been up to. We are sure your friends have loved seeing them too as we like to share them on Twitter.
Below you will find the activities list for week 4.
Starter
Let’s wake up the brains with a maze this week…can you escape? We also have a rebus puzzle for you…can you use the size and positioning of the words and symbols to work out the common words/phrases? Springtime Maze Easier Springtime Maze Harder Rebus Puzzle
Maths
There were some great examples of your maths shared last week! We also saw that lots of you worked hard to complete your Heinemann activities.
This week there is a recap challenge on Sumdog. The challenge covers some different areas of maths that we have worked on over the school year. Can you complete the challenge of 250 by 12pm, Saturday?
This week we would like you to revisit ‘shape’. Can you remember the names of some 2D and 3D shapes? First, try completing the ‘Name the Shape worksheet’. We’ve left the answers on the second sheet so that you can check your answers before the next challenge. Next, could you look around your house and try to find as many shapes as you can? It would be good to try and look for 2D and 3D shapes. Keep a list of the shapes and name the objects. Challenge – can you record the properties of your shapes? Count the sides and vertices (corners) of 2D shapes. Then count the faces, edges and vertices of 3D shapes. For a little fun to finish, there is a colour by shape sheet for you. Name the Shape Colour the shapes
Finally, here are some use some useful links to a variety of games that will help you further remember or practise what you learned.

Writing
This week for your writing activity, try to use your wonderful planning page that you did last week to construct a poem all about “My World.” Remember the ‘magic spell’: Adjective, Noun, Verb…More Information. Take one word from each box and then expand on your idea to put a super descriptive picture in your reader’s head. The poem can take any form you wish. It can be an acrostic poem, a simile poem, a metaphor poem, an abstract noun poem, a shape poem… the list is endless: let your imagination take you in any direction you want to go!
If you wish, you could illustrate your poem with images that go with your text. You could handwrite it or do it on the computer. If you do it on the computer, we would love you to send us a copy so we can read and share your brilliant work!
Here are a few examples just in case you need a wee reminder of how to put all this together.
- The beautiful sunbeams giggle as they burst through the gaps between the vibrant green trees.
- Sparkling stars protect my dreams as they watch over me at night.
- Rapid rivers meander through the valley like the lazy smoke from a summer campfire.
Reading
This week we have a reading comprehension for you all about VE day. On the 8th May we will celebrate ‘Victory in Europe Day’ which marks the end of the 2nd World War in Europe. Try and answer in full sentences just as we have been doing in class. There are 3 different levels of difficulty so you can choose your own challenge (1 star is the easiest and 3 stars the most challenging). We have included the answers sheets so that you can self-assess afterward. VE Day Reading Comprehension
Health and Wellbeing
- Kindness Challenge
This week we would like you to focus on what you can do to make members of your family feel happy. When we are kind to others it cheers them up, but it also makes us feel good too! Below is a list of suggestions to get you started but we are sure you can come up with your own too. Try to do one of them per day and use the ‘Kindness Diary’ to fill in what you did. It would be lovely to see the happy faces of the people you cheer up! Kindness Diary
- Make your mum or dad a cup of tea
- Tidy your room (without being asked)
- Phone a member of your family that you can’t visit at the moment
- Write a letter to someone you miss
- Take time to care for a pet (if you have one)
- Give an extra big hug to someone who takes care of you and thank them
Music
Mrs Allan hopes that you are well and have had a good week. Here is the next recorder challenge for the primary fives, but again we are sharing it with you all as you may enjoy trying this on any instrument. This week the song is…My Heart Will Go On. Here are the recorder instructions and the music. Recorder challenge 3 My Heart Will Go On
Mrs Taylor and Miss McNab now have pages set up on the website underneath the class lists. Going forward they will be posting music and physical exercise lessons there for you to try.
Competition
Would you like to take part in a UK wide competition for primary children? Well, here is your chance! The challenge is to design a banner that thanks and shows support to the NHS and key workers, for their dedication and hard work during this pandemic. Five winners will be picked, and they will have their artwork recreated by a design company and printed on to a big 3x1m banner to be proudly attached to the school gates! To enter, you simply need to take a photograph of your completed worksheet and email it to hello@fsedesign.co.uk alongside your full name, age and details of your school. The closing date is Friday 8th May at 5pm! Winners will be announced on Monday 11th May! For more information, please visit the website https://www.fsedesign.co.uk/home/about-us/blog/key-worker-banner-competition/
