P6GS Home School Learning 27 April – Week 3

P5/6A and P6GS W/C 27.04.2020

Good morning! We really hope that you managed to enjoy some of the lovely sunshine that we had last week. We have been so lucky with the weather.  Welcome to week three of Term 4.

Last week you were issued your Glow usernames and passwords. Glow allows you to access Microsoft Office for FREE! It is also an opportunity for you to access even more resources. Glow is another avenue that allows you to contact us directly via email (you can still post pictures on Twitter). On your launchpad there is a ‘Mail’ tile, this is the one to access your Glow email. We have sent you all a little email, saying hello, so that you have our email addresses.

This week we are introducing our class ‘Teams’. Microsoft Teams is a secure platform we are using to further improve communication between teachers, pupils, parents and carers. The package ‘Teams’ is available through pupils Glow accounts that we previously encouraged you to register. You should have received a text about this. Please email the school if you do not have this.  If you have not registered yourself/your child onto Glow then you will need to do this before you can access Teams. Please follow this video link to register your pupils’ Glow account. If you have previously completed this, please read the next paragraph.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItEbqOMTgyM

Please follow the video below to get yourself/your child onto your school class ‘Teams’ page. We have created the class ‘Teams’ page and they are ready for you. These pages allow teachers to use a chat room to speak directly to pupils or parents and each other.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I4Lq6rl5Z4

You will also have been sent a text with a link to a questionnaire. Please take a moment to complete this survey so that we can receive your feedback.  https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/9GCC7Q3

Thank you for the work and pictures you have sent so far. Please don’t worry if you haven’t managed to complete all of last week’s activities; you can continue to use any of the suggestions, from any of the weeks. There is no requirement to get everything done as we know families are busy in this difficult time.  Here are some suggested activities to help to keep you busy this week. Remember to send us some pictures.

Starter

We have found another couple of different starters for you this week. There is an activity where you have to fit all the listed words into the grid. You will need to use other words and their letters to help you decide which word goes where. There is also a crossword for you to try your hand at. Again, you might want to challenge others to have a go too!  Fill in & Crossword

Maths

This week you might want to recap on Money. The first activity looks back at estimating and ordering the cost of different items. Try using sticky notes or pieces of paper for this one. Decide how many items you want to think of (minimum of 5). On each note, write the name of an item you could pay for. You might want to work as a group for this one, if you do, collect in all the notes then, as a group or individually, sort them in order from what you think is the cheapest to the most expensive. Next, on the notes, write an estimate of their prices. For example, a sweet 50p; a car £9000. If you fancy a challenge, you might want to add on price ranges. For example, a car might be £700 – £30,000. Finally, you could use the internet to search for your items and see if your price estimates were good.

The second money-based activity is ‘What Would You Buy?’. Choose one of the price lists attached and then decide and work out what you would buy with the budget. Make sure to write the list of the items with the prices, the total and any money left over. If you want, you can always have a go for each one. Your budgets are £20 for the supermarket, £140 for the clothes shop, £120 for the toy shop.   Supermarket Price Card  Clothes Price Card  Toy Price Card

We’ve also added two new number-based games onto Heinemann Active for you to play.

Writing

This week we are going to go back and have a little look at poetry and see what you can remember. When we did it in class you created the most wonderful and descriptive poems that were full of similes, metaphors and personification. (If you have forgotten what any of these are then there were a few YouTube clips that we particularly liked singing along to in class that we’re sure will jog your memory!)

Your task this week is to plan a poem all about Your World. Take a good look around you. What can you see, hear, smell etc… When you are out for your daily exercise, really pay attention to the environment around you and try to put it into words. On your walk/bike ride do you see a beautiful waterfall cascading peacefully over the silky pebbles or perhaps you see the breeze laughing happily as it brushes the leaves across the street? Remember the magic spell: Adjective, Noun, Verb…then add more information.

Try to have fun with the language you are creating. What kind of words can you include in your plan…we hope lots of descriptive, Higher-Order words.  Blank Planning My World[5234]

Reading

  • Fiction

Carry on reading whatever novel you are on but just read it for pleasure this week. Where are you reading? In bed? In a den in the garden? With a sibling? To a pet? Send us your photos!

  • Non-Fiction

Try and read some non-fiction this week. This might be a book on a subject that interests you or a website. Please tell us what you have been reading.

Health and Wellbeing

We are sure that you are still taking your daily exercise of a walk, run or cycle but if you would like to do some extra fitness, then here is a challenge for you! You only need a pack of playing cards and you could do it out in the garden on a nice day.   Card Challenge

  • Relaxation

Give yourself some time out and listen to some relaxation music. You can google ‘relaxation music’ or just choose any music that you enjoy and that makes you happy. You could dome some mindfulness colouring at the same time.   Pets mindfulness

Music

Mrs Allan has set the Primary 5’s a new recorder challenge for this week but we thought that any of you who have a musical instrument at home may also enjoy the challenge. The challenge is a song that you will all be familiar with…Happy Birthday! Click on the links for the instructions from Mrs Allan and the musical notes for the song. There is also a music activity from Mrs Taylor attached for you to try.   Recorder Challenge 1   Recorder Notes 1   Mrs Taylor’s Music Week 3

Other: Photography

If you don’t already have access to your own phone or tablet, speak kindly to a parent or carer and ask nicely if you can borrow theirs for a photography challenge. All you will need is some “Googly Eyes” and some Blu Tac. Your challenge is to look closely at your outdoor/indoor environment and try to use the googly eyes to make an object come to life and turn “Human.” Then, take a picture. We would love to see all the things around your home that you have given life to by adding a pair of googly eyes!

Here are some examples of what you could do:

Have a great week! Remember to send us some photos and let us know what you have been getting up to.

Stay safe

Miss Anderson, Mrs Green and Mrs Spencer.
