Afterschool Rugby Club is for P4/7 pupils and takes place on a Monday from 3.15/4.30.
We look to initially do warm up and play games such as Line Tig or Chaos Tig to promote movement and awareness of space.
Skill based tasks are then introduced such as passing, positioning, defensive lines & attacking lines.
The aim is to provide the players with a range of skills to allow them take part in Hawick Ball – a variation of touch/Rugby Netball.
We used to teach full contact tackling but I have changed the focus to non –  contact to maintain player numbers and focus on the fun and teamwork aspect.
I actively promote Moray RFC if pupils want to take it to the next level.
During the winter months we do teach tackle training and use tackle bags and will progress to tackling each but in a safe and non game environment.
We will use the hall from November to April mostly due to the poor weather/lighting in the Winter months.
The Winter period is used to hone our passing, positional play and teamwork so that when we go back outdoors in April, we are ready to play full games of Hawick Ball.
In the school session 2023/24 Mr Kinsella took a P6 team to the Academy to play in a Hawick Ball tournament organised by Highlife/Moray RFC.
