Although it is important to identify where we are now, it is not enough to stop there. We need to reflect upon how we can develop the skills where we are less confident and how we can transfer the skills in which we are confident and competent.
Activity 2
Complete the audit below, using the information from the table above.
Recognition | Reflection | Action |
Skills already developed | How will I use these | How do I know (evidence)** |
Motivation | It is important for me to be motivated to ensure that I can get work done and complete jobs around the camp. | Throughout assignment time, I was extremely motivated to get my work done on time and to the best of my ability. |
Team Work | During my LfL placement, I will be working with other members of staff at the outdoor school. It is important to ensure that I can work well as part of a team to ensure that we can provide the best learning experience for the children, and that activities get organised. | I have already met the majority of the staff and I live with a lot of them. Therefore, I already know that I get along with them and can work well with them as we have already had jobs to carry out. |
Enthusiastic | It is important for me to be enthusiastic when working with the children to ensure that I can get the most out of my placement. Moreover, it is important to be enthusiastic when teaching children, to ensure that they see that I am excited about learning, which will also make them excited and eager to learn. | When working with children during my first placement, I ensured that I was enthusiastic when teaching my lessons to keep the children interested, and make them eager and enthusiastic to learn themselves. |
Organisation | Throughout my placement, it is important to ensure that I am organised for many reasons. For example, I must ensure that I am organised when it comes to leading children in activities, taking them to and from activities and teaching them lessons. Moreover, I must be organised to ensure that I can get my uni work done whilst on placement, and that I do not fall behind. | Throughout the year at uni, I have been extremely good at organising myself and my work, and ensuring that it gets completed on time. |
Setting Personal Goals | It is important for me to set personal goals throughout my placement, to ensure that I get what I want from it, and achieve what I desire from the experience. | I have had a lot of experience in setting personal goals, both in university; to ensure that I can get work done, and also outside of university in the likes of the Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme. |
** This section should be completed as you identify when/where/how you have used/developed these skills.
Recognition | Reflection | Action |
Skills to be developed | How will I develop these | How do I know (evidence)** |
Confidence | I must be confident throughout my placement, especially when teaching environmental education to the children. Showing confidence allows the children to see that I am confident in what I am teaching them. I must also be confident in my own ability to teach the children and lead activities, as I know that I am competent enough to do so.
Leadership | I will be showing leadership during my placement, by leading groups to and from activities, and will also be teaching lessons.
Risk Taking | During my placement, I will be taking risks when teaching environmental education, as this is not an area which I am confident in. Moreover, outdoor education involves a lot of risk taking in itself and it is important to ensure that I am confident in doing so.
Communication | Throughout my placement I need to be able to communicate with everyone who I’m working with including; children and other staff. However, when I’m nervous I sometimes find it hard to communicate clearly and effectively.
