Power Maths

Today we worked on our Power Maths books. We looked at the place value activities and applied the skills of partitioning, ordering and sorting numbers. Mr Green was very impressed!

Homework this week is a special task for the whole school. Each child has been given a hand print and on each finger the should write a word that describes themselves. The can write one word or a sentence and can draw themselves on the palm. This should be brought back to school on Monday 21st and in line with COVID procedures will be quarantined before being used to create a whole school display.

Tuesday 15th September 2020

Well done to the twenty-two pupils who made it onto this week’s Good Work Wall! As you can see from the photograph above, the children produced work of a very high quality and were all worthy winners of a sticker and two House tokens. Well done, boys and girls!

It was an absolute pleasure meeting all the nursery boys and girls properly yesterday. One little girl had clearly been doing her homework on me:

Me: ‘Does anyone know who I am?’

Nursery child: ‘Mr Young!’

Me: ‘Does anyone know what my job is?’

Nursery child: ‘You’re the Head Teacher!’

Me: ‘What does a Head Teacher do?’

Nursery child: ‘Paperwork!’

It was music to my ears when I found out that the nursery children have their names written on their shoes: learning their names will be so much easier.

Of course, I don’t have this luxury further up the school. However, I did manage to memorise all the names in Primary 4b yesterday afternoon and will be working my way through the other classes in the purple bay during the course of this week.

Monday 14th September 2020

I had a very busy, but thoroughly enjoyable, first week here in Cathedral Primary. As well as having meetings with Derek Brown (Executive Director, Education & Families), Brendan Duffy (our school’s Quality Improvement Manager), and the other OLHS cluster Head Teachers, I also managed to have dedicated meetings with the Lead Practitioners from the Nursery, our three clerical staff and the Head Teacher from Firpark Primary.

On the to-do list for this week is to spend some dedicated time in our Nursery as well as the classes in the purple bay, meet online with the Parent Council this evening, get together with our support staff and last (but certainly not least!!!) of all, meet with teaching staff after school on Thursday.

Please can I take this opportunity, once again, to thank everyone for making me feel so welcome during my first week. I feel very much at home in Cathedral Primary already!

Funday Friday

Today we described an underground train journey, using what we have learned about rhythm and rhyme. We then used the title ‘Above My Head’ as our inspiration for another piece of writing

Primary 6/7 enjoyed outdoor PE again today. Playing team games that involve fitness, strategy and teamwork.

Poems on the Table

We have been reading Table a poem by Turkish poet Edip Cansever translated by Richard Tillinghast. The class have been writing their own poem basted on the ‘shape’ of this poem. Click the titles to read the poems.

“Cool Class” Thursday

Today we imagined that we were standing in a busy city, and using our prior knowledge from this week’s language lessons we had to visualise and describe what was beneath our feet.
Today we got to take part in Woodlands Primary Schools first virtual assembly. We listened to Mr Green, Miss Ferguson and Mrs Thomson. The class were delighted to win the first Cool Class Cup of the new school year.

Thursday 10th September 2020

There was great excitement across the school yesterday when I informed the children about some changes to weekly Pupil of the Week awards. From tomorrow, the Pupil of the Week from each class will receive one of the certificates shown above, have their name posted on the school website and also be rewarded with an extra playtime with Mr Young which will include a sweet treat to enjoy. The downside, of course, is that Cathedral Primary is full to the brim with polite, hard-working children, so it’s going to be a near impossible task for teachers to select only one child each week! Please check out the website tomorrow morning for this week’s winners.

Fire Pit Fun 🔥

IMG_3669
Yesterday we had a fire in the playground for this to go ahead we had to sit at the fire pit and we needed to have the right equipment.
So we fixed the logs at the fire pit and got water kindling and the first aid kit.
With all that we where ready to start so me and Aaron cut the kindling while Lara laid a bed of kindling. Then we made a triangle of kindling because triangles are a sturdy object with all that we where ready to go.

So we started the fire using flint and steal and then it got smokey which got annoying but I got use to it.
We got a stick and put a marshmallow and apple on it we roasted them but before we did we needed to ask to approach the fire.
The marshmallow and apple tasted really good.after that we sat and chatted for a bit and then mr Johnston put the fire out and that was it.

I enjoyed the fire and food I’m happy and appreciative about us being able to go out and have a fire.

Yesterday, the primary 6 & 7 went out to cook marshmallows and apples in the fire.

In the afternoon we all went out to have a fire at the fire pit we all went outside and got the fire ready.

First we got a fire king or queen. Kaitlyn was the fire queen. Lara made the fire bed using kindling Me and Jonah cut up. To start the fire we all went around in a circle lighting sparks to see who could light the fire. Kristy got the bests spark so we got some bog cotton and some wood and lit to on fire we flung it in the bed and we could already smell the fire.

After a few minutes we went inside and grabbed our own sticks and trapped one of each marshmallow and apple slice. We attached them to our sticks and went back into the fire circle. Half of the people approached the fire and cooked the marshmallow most people burnt there’s but some people got it a Krispy golden brown. Brown makes it delicious. My apple got burnt so I couldn’t eat it. Kaitlyn let go her apple and accidentally dropped it in the fire.

After we eat all the lovely food we all had circle time and showed how we felt. But everyone got to choose what question they wanted and we went around the circle and finished up.

We plan on making on other one soon we all had an amazing time outside and I hope you enjoyed my story of the fire pit.

By Aaron & Jonah.
