Imagine a situation where a child is immersed in growth mindset culture all day at school.
They are encouraged to embrace challenge and learn from their mistakes. At home, they find their maths homework difficult and mum says, “Oh don’t worry, you get that from me…I was rubbish at maths. We’re good at languages in our family”. Contradictions like this can be very confusing and damaging to a child.
Parents have a huge influence over their children; they are their first teacher, and they spend a huge chunk of time with their child each day. Their attitudes, beliefs and mindsets will help to shape the attitudes, beliefs and mindsets of their child. It is for this reason that meaningful parental engagement with school is crucial.
