Week’s news – sorry it’s late!

This week in nursery we are watching our caterpillars grow.  Our ladybird larvae kit arrived too and we are hoping to breed ladybirds to release into our orchard.

Our farmyard and farm kitchen are looking great with lots of lovely farm art by the children.  If you haven’t had a look yet, please hop in to the Creativity zone and have a look at our learning wall.  We  are making leek and potato soup in the farm kitchen tomorrow! Yum!

Many thanks for the great response to the trip letter.  Lots and lots of people are going.  Apologies that we can’t take wee brothers and sisters on the bus – it is not covered by insurance.

Parents night interview times are up on the back of the hall door on Wednesday 24th May- please sign up for a time if you would like a chat with  your child’s keyworker.  If this date is not suitable and you would like time to talk about your wee star, please just ask and we can arrange a time after nursery for you.

Tickets are on sale for the Big Nursery Night Out at the Fraser Centre on 19th May.  They cost £5 each and there is an honesty box on the radiator in the hall to put the money in.  We are really grateful to Angela and Sheila for organising it – all profits are going to the Nursery fund!!

It looks like good weather all week – please remember sunscreen and a sunhat- essential for outdoor play!  Many thanks!

Door Security

Please could we ask all parents and carers who visit our nursery to be very vigilant about door security.  Please don’t open the door for other parents – leave that to the staff.  Wee people can escape if the door is held open and our car park is a dangerous place.  Many thanks for cooperating with us on this!

Roman Chic!

Look at Elisabeth’s latest hat for outdoor play!  Its a crocheted Roman Helmet and she looks amazing in it!  Elisabeth is our Early Years Support for Learning Assistant and she has just finished a distance learning course on Autistic Spectrum Disorders.  Nice look Elisabeth and congratulations on graduating from the course!

Do you have a trailer for a boat, that we could borrow?

Pam – an incredibly resourceful opportunist- has managed to talk her way to getting us a 14ft sailing boat for the garden.  We have seen them used as a play resource in other nurseries and we think it would be fabulous!  Here is a photo of the wee beauty! (the boat – not Pam!)

Unfortunately the free boat doesn’t have a working trailer and we would need a GP14 trailer to transport it.  If you have a boat trailer, or know of anywhere we could borrow or hire one, please let us know!  We would be so grateful!!!

What did we learn in the garden today?

Struan found this piece of rotten wood

“Look – it’s got wood lice in it!” he said

Collecting all sorts of things to put in their mixture – great discussion about what everything was!

“We’re in a boat!” and we are using our imaginations!

“Why does this piece of grass grow bigger than the rest?” Lots of interesting questions from our two intrepid garden explorers.

Taking turns and having a chat at the top of the slide.

Playing house in the willow den-the children made the addition of the lovely red plastic shelves themselves and moved them all the way through the garden and up the stairs all by themselves!

The “staff” arrive to open their “Ice Cream Shop”.

Balancing along the raised beds!

Enjoying listening to the birds and being out in the cold spring sunshine!

More mud masterchef!

Dinner is ready!

Collecting gravel – essential ingredient for the dish of the day! Teamwork!

First planting in our polytunnel

One of our newest recruits helps plant bean plants in our new polytunnel.

An exciting day – our first polytunnel planting! Lynn had planted bean seeds with the children last week and today we transplanted the wee seedlings into the polytunnel veg bed

Seedlings need watered in!

Last month Charlie had planted the seeds from his apple – they germinated and grew into wee seedlings.

Today he took them out to the polytunnel to put them into pots- he’s hoping for big apple trees!

Outdoor artists

Two of our lovely girls enjoying some outdoor creativity with art materials provided by Maureen.  “We’re real painters!  We’re painting flowers!”

Nursery Newts

One of the newts from our pond – unfortunately it is dead! We did see a couple of live ones though!

The pond was a busy place this morning as there was so much to see.

Elisabeth is our fantastically brave person who can lift dead newts without flinching. Scott was very interested in seeing what a newt looked like.

Two newts were sheltering in a corner under a rock. We could see their little legs and tail.

We tried using glass bowls to get a better view of what lives under the water

Lots of different creatures live in our pond – we saw waterbeetles and a sort of swimming centipede thing. We are going to try to find out what they all are.

Monday morning news

Wow!  Monday again and it’s looking like being a sunny morning.  This week in nursery we have a busy time planned.  We have new visitors to our pond – newts!  We will hopefully catch sight of a few this week and find out a bit about them.

We have a fabulous new mud kitchen taking shape thanks to Lynn and Gavin (our lovely site co-ordinator).  The cooker is being fitted some time this week and we are looking forward to making some lovely muddy delights later in the week.

At the weekend Anne, Sean and Stewart finished the orchard polytunnel – a huge amount of work!  We will be planting in it this week – salad veg, pumpkins and beans!  Anne and I also went to Dobbies and bought an amazing amount of tools and herb plants.  The herb plants are for the front of the nursery and we have 60 which we are hoping the school will help us plant in a couple of weeks.  In the meantime we are going to look at all the different plants,  smell them and vote for our favourite herb!

Orange and Blue groups are our gym groups on Tuesday morning and on Friday we are looking forward to a visit from Susan and her Snappy Sounds music workshop.  I wonder what Mr Snappy will have in his backpack for us this week?

On Thursday staff are receiving training on new online Learning Journals which we are going to trial with some of our children in the next few months.  I’m at a course on Staff/Child interaction on Thursday afternoon.

Our home corner is a farm kitchen just now and there is a lot of spring cleaning going on.  We are hoping to revamp the lookout post this week and have been learning about farm animals and doing lots of farm artwork. Watch out for a farmyard transformation!

If you haven’t returned your trip slip yet, please, please let us have it this week.  We don’t need the money yet but we do need to know how many children and parents are coming so that we can book the right amount of buses. Thank you!

Happy Monday!
