Language matters – Supporting care experienced learners

Last year, Enquire launched Navigate – an online hub for those supporting care experienced children and young people. One year on we reflect on the power of language when talking about care experienced young people, and how learning from the Each and Every Child initiative has strengthened our approach

At Enquire, we are committed to communicating and championing the rights of children and young people in education. Whether we are responding on the helpline, sharing information on social media or creating resources, our everyday conversations are a constant reminder of the central role that language plays when we are talking about children’s rights to additional support for learning. In the jargon-filled world of ‘ASL’, there’s hope in our collective care and examination of how the words we use reflect our values as a service.

Drawing from their own experiences, the young people have created a short paper reflecting on a range of factors – from what they most enjoy in lessons and reflections on the wider curriculum, to the importance of relationships and being seen as an individual.

Supporting professionals to deliver support for learning

Delivering support for learning for the wide range of needs in your setting can be daunting – but you don’t have to do it alone.

Latest figures from the Scottish Government, (Pupil and Teacher Characteristics, 2025) suggest approx 43% of pupils in mainstream schools in Scotland have a recognised additional support need – a statistic that has been on an upward trajectory since 2009.

Further data, pulled from the Pupil Census (Scottish Government, 2025),  identified class teachers were once again the primary source of support in both primary and secondary school settings.

But teachers, education, support and early years staff are not expected to deliver this alone.
