Enquire’s has guidance available which offers practical advice on managing behaviour-related incidents in educational settings and providing a timeline of support.
Our Managing Behaviour in Schools: A Timeline of Support resource sets out the different ways that children in distress can be supported and recommends a range of actions. Ideas and advice are set out in different stages, from managing the incident itself and steps to take in the days and weeks following, to ways to move forward together.
Based on insights and ideas shared with us by professionals, including school staff and support workers, we examine the language around behaviour and explore the relationship between distressed behaviour and additional support needs. We also build on what the Inclusion Ambassadors have told us about behaviour in schools, the importance of communication and taking time to understand the individual needs of the child.
Recognising that supporting distressed behaviour in schools is an ongoing process that involves providing support before, during, and after an incident, we offer practical tips for responses in the moment, the immediate aftermath and beyond.
We cover:
- Key things to remember in the moment – safety of yourself and the pupil(s) involved should always be the first priority
- Recognise and respond – giving space and time for those involved to reach a calmer emotional state and listening to the child;s experience of what happened may help regulate and identify a way forward
- Understanding what led to the incident may help avoid the same behaviour happening again. What actions, environment, language or events triggered the incident?
- The importance of a response which puts actions and supports in place to avoid a repeat incident.
